The Energy Saving and Environmental Problems of Energy Sector international conference and the IXth Energy of Karelia International Exhibition pased in Petrozavodsk from December 10 to 12, at the organizational support of Petrozavodsk State University and the State Committee of the Republic of Karelia on Reforming of Housing and Communal Services.
Reports at the conference were made by scientists of Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science, PetrSU and other instituteu of higher education of Russia, as well as representatives of the Finnish companies.
The Energy of Karelia exhibition has given an opportunity to heads and experts of the Karelian enterprises to see the newest developments in this area, to negotiate with production manufacturers and manufacturing planners.
Participants of the meeting have also got acquainted with the useful information in the field of electric power accounting, resource saving and opportunities of independent power supply.

Meeting of scholarship holders of the Oxford Russian FundMeeting of scholarship holders of the Oxford Russian Fund was held in PetrSU.
The second year students of six humanitarian faculties of our university participate in the scholarship program of the Oxford Russian Fund.
91 students of PetrSU in 2007 and 73 more students in 2008 became the scholarship holders of the Fund. Thus, today scholarships of the Fund are awarded to 164 humanities students of Petrozavodsk.

Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish projects of the 'Solveig' Youth ClubMeeting of the Solveig Youth Club participants passed in PetrSU.
The attendees shared their impressions of participation in international projects and trips to Finland and Sweden.
Participants of the meeting watched a presentation telling in detail about the conference: the event included discussions, design activity, as well as a presentation exhibition of youth organizations and human rights trainings. The attendees could plunge in the atmosphere of the conference upon watching the Andrey Prokhorov's film about the trip to Sweden and participating in the "Compass" training on human rights and search of compromises in various situations.

Future of the Barents Region international conference passed in Oulu on November 25-26 under the patronage of the prime minister of Finland Matti Vanhanen.
Our university at the conference was represented by the PetrSU president professor Victor Vasiliev and Assistant Professor of the Chair of History of Countries of Northern Europe Ilya Solomeshch.

The 'Border Problems in Modern International Relations' International fall school, November 19-22, 2008From November 19 to 22, 2008 Directorate for international cooperation of Petrozavodsk State University at financial support of the Nordic Council of Ministers and Representations of the European Commission to Russia has held the Border Problems in Modern International Relations International fall school.
Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of PetrSU, Faculty of Law of PetrSU, Volgograd State University, the European Commission's Delegation to Russia and the Karelian Institute in Finland have been involved in cooperation.

On representation of the board of the union of writers of Karelia the senior student of the faculty of Baltic and Finnish philology and culture Julia Eremkina was awarded with the Jaakko Rugoev grant, and the freshman student of the faculty of medicine of PetrSU Anastasia Evtukhovich was awarded with the Robert Rozhdestvensky grant.
The solemn award ceremony took place in the building of the government of the RK in the office of the Head of the Republic of Karelia.

On the materials of the Readings from Bubrich traditional scientific conference devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Chair of Finnish language and literature, Petrozavodsk State University has published the collection of scientific articles Readings from Bubrich: Problems of Functioning and Contacting of Languages and Cultures of Baltic and Finnish Peoples edited by the Associate Professor Tamara Starshova, Ph.D. in Philolody.
Faculty of Baltic and Finnish philology and culture has also published a collection of Finnish Language Conversational Practice Texts and Exercises compiled by L.N.Nazarova.

Student of PetrSU Taisia Rogova became the winner of the Hope of Russia 2008 premium grant competition.
The freshman student of the faculty of mathematics Taisia Rogova became the winner of the Hope of Russia 2008 premium grant competition for high achievements in the field of mathematics and research activity. The award ceremony was held on November 10, 2008 in Oktyabrsky Grand Concert Hall, St.-Petersburg.
The student was awarded with the grant, special prize, M.Lomonosov medal and the diploma of Coordination Council of Creative Unions, the Fund for support of education and Academy of public relations.

Meeting of the Rector of PetrSU with participanmts of the Youth Unites North International student camp Youth Unites North International student camp was held at Petrozavodsk State University on the basis of Urozero education and health center from October 25 to October 31, 2008
The camp was held under initiative of the local trade union committee of students of PetrSU at the support of CIRIUS and the State Committee of the RK on Youth. The 58 best representatives of the most famous youth organizations from 7 North-Eorupean countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Northwest of Russia) participate in the camp. The camp's working language is English.
On October 29 Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin and Head of the Directorate for International Cooperation Liudmila Kulikovskaya have held a meeting with the camp participants.

On October 28-29 Regional Center for rural education development of PetrSU together with Petrozavodsk Pedagogical College, Karelian State Pedagogical University, Institute of professional development for educationalists of the RK has held an inter-regional research and practice conference Rural school of Russia at the stage of modernization: educational potential, prospects of development.
Conference was held on the basis of Petrozavodsk State University, Petrozavodsk pedagogical college and three secondary comprehensive schools of Prionezhsky region: villages of Ladva and Zaozerie and the settlement of Meliorativny. Within the scope of the conference there passed a plenary session, thematic group meetings, presentations of innovative experience of rural educational establishments of the RK, as well as exhibition of scientific and methodical researches and projects.

Meeting of students in  the 'Solveig' International Youth ClubIn the Solveig International Youth Club there passed the regular information meeting on the subject of Teaching students in foreign countries.
Students of the PetrSU faculties of philology, political and social sciences, and Baltic and Finnish philology told about features of training in Norway and Belgium and about their impressions. Now these students have come to Karelia on vacation or have already completed their training within the European grants.

Work of the Selection Committee of the second application round within the Triple I - Integration, Interaction and Institutions ProjectWork of the Selection Committee of the second application round within the Triple I - Integration, Interaction and Institutions Project within the scope of the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window program of the EU passed in St.-Petersburg.
From Petrozavodsk State University 14 undergraduate and post-graduate students and teachers applied for academic trips to the European universities. Our participants have gained an opportunity to perform a part of their academic and scientific plan at universities of Bologna (Italy), Turku (Finland), Middle-East Technical University (Turkey) and University of Algarve (Portugal).

The 'North American Finns in Soviet Karelia in 1930s' collection of worksOn results of the North American Finns in Soviet Karelia international scientific seminar held in May 2008 in Petrozavodsk State University the Chair of history of countries of Northern Europe of PetrSU has published the North American Finns in Soviet Karelia in 1930s collection of works.
The collection includes articles of researchers from Canada (universities of York and Toronto), the USA (universities of Nebraska, Omaha; Minnesota, Duluth; Augustan college), Finland (University of Helsinki), Sweden (University of Umeå), Russia (PetrSU, National archive of the RK) and contains results of work of two international research projects devoted to histories of stay of Finns-immigrants from the USA and Canada in Soviet Karelia in the 1920 and 30s.

The Annual European conference of the Frontier Reserch Association passed in Kirkenes (Norway) From September 11 to 13. The conference was organizes by the University of Tromsø and Barents-institute, and also PetrSU ( Laboratory on the problems of Scandinavian countries and Finland).
Broad interdisciplinary character of the conference has been provided by participation of historians, experts in the field of international relations and cultures, sociologists and political scientists from eleven European countries, and also from Canada, the USA, Israel and Japan.

Within the period from August 25 to 30 within the scope of preparation for opening of the Center of Mobile and Wireless Systems Summer School was held in Petrozavodsk State University.
Training within the scope of the school was offered for more than 60 students of faculties of mathematics and physical engineering of PetrSU. Summer School is the first educational initiative for creation of the Center which will open by the end of 2008.

Opening ceremony of the team programming camp took place in Petrozavodsk State University.
In total, the camp organizers expected 33 teams, or 113 participants to come. The majority of participating teams were the strongest teams of Russia, representatives of such universities, as: St.-Petersburg university of fine mechanics and optics, St.-Petersburg State University, Moscow State University, MPTU. Also there have been presented teams from Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine, arrival of teams from Japan źThe University of Tokyo Saitama University╗ and Finland źHelsinki University of Technology╗ was expected. PetrSU presented 4 teams, trained by Denis Vlasov and Vladimir Kuznetsov.

Representative of the Center of Russian Language in Paris V.Kluzhina has visited PetrSU on August 17-18, 2008.
For more than 4 years PetrSU has been cooperating with the Center of Russian Language for promotion of various educational programs for foreign citizens.
During her visit V.Kluzhin has visited Russian for foreign students classes, met with teachers working with foreign students, got acquainted with their accommodation conditions.

Students of the Chair of Tourism of Petrozavodsk State University work on probation at the enterprises of travel industry of the city and beyond.
The territorial range varies, including Karelia, Northwest, other regions of Russia, and the USA. In total during their training period students work on probation four times, they have a fortnight educational practice, 8 weeks of production practice, as well as 6 weeks of predegree practice.

Petrozavodsk State University welcomed the famous Russian poet, laureate of the USSR state prize, prose writer, publicist, member of the Writers' Union of Moscow, Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Karelian poet, Honoured worker of culture of the Republic of Karelia, Chairman of the Karelian Writers' Union Marat Tarasov.
At the meeting with the PetrSU Rector Anatoly Voronin and Vice-rector for Informatization Natalia Ruzanova the poets shared their creative plans, and Yevgeny Yevtushenko presented his latest book and expressed a wish to give a concert in December.

The Influence of Logging Technologies on Operational Expenses, Labour Safety and Productivity, Forest Environment and Quality of Forest Products in Logging Đompanies of the Republic of Karelia seminar began in the conference hall of PetrSU.

Results of the II All-Russia contest of scientific and creative works of international undergraduate and post-graduate students were summed up.
The contest passed on the basis of Tomsk polytechnical university at the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Federal Education Agency and Foreign Student Association of Russia. A student from Norway Jonas Hinriksen Gjervold who studied in our university within 2007-2008 academic year represented PetrSU in the contest.

On June 13-14 Finnish town of Lahti hosted international methodical seminar for teachers of Russian as a foreign language Topical Issues of Methods of Teaching of Russian as a Foreign Language.
More than 50 teachers of universities, schools and language centers from 7 countries, basically the Baltic region: Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Poland, Austria have taken part in the seminar. Methodologist of Directorate for international cooperation, teacher of Russian as a foreign language Marina Khazova participated in the seminar.

It has become a tradition that by the end of the academic year international students studying Russian in our university take final exams and participate in the learning conference.
This year the conference was devoted to the students' native or favorite cities of the world. There have been made eight reports about Boston (USA), Ansan (South Korea), Oslo (Norway), Helsinki (Finland), York (Great Britain), Seoul (South Korea), New Orleans (USA), Las Vegas (USA). Reports have been well-prepared, accompanied it with bright multimedia presentations and were heard with great interest.

Chair of history of countries of Northern Europe of PetrSU has held the North American Finns in Soviet Karelia in 1930s international scientific conference at partricipation of researchers from Canada, the USA, Finland, Sweden and Russia.
The conference has brought preliminary results of two research projects devoted to the history of Finnish emigrants from the USA and Canada who lived in Soviet Karelia in the 1920-1930s.
In the international scientific seminar organized by Petrozavodsk State University and held in English take part researchers from York and Toronto universities (Canada), universities of Nebraska, Omaha; Minnesota, Duluth; Augustana college (USA), university of Helsinki (Finland), universities of cities of Umea* (Sweden), as well as undergraduate and post-graduate students of universities of Petrozavodsk, Toronto, Helsinki and Joensuu.

Energy Security International Summer School was held at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of PetrSU. The Faculty's partners on School were the Information Centre of the European Union of PetrSU, Institute of Renewable Energy Sources (Iceland) and University of Lapland (Finland).
Subject matter of the school is the order of the day. Energy security is one of the most important aspects of modern international relations.

PetrSU hosted the meeting of rectors of the Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University.
Representatives of universities of Tampere, Joensuu, Kuopio, Laappenranta, SPbSU and PetrSU have taken part in the meeting. They discussed issues concerning marketing policy, development of new Master's programs and programs of post-graduate education, results of work in the current academic year. The next meeting is scheduled for the beginning of December 2008 in Tampere.

Three PetrSU grant-aided students of the Oxford Russia Fund (ORF) won the student essay competition for participants of the ORF scholarship program in Russia.
The Oxford Russia Fund annually conducts a week summer school of creative development in Yasnaya Polyana for the best grant-aided students. Selection is held on the basis of essay competition. According to the decision of the Advisory Council this July in the summer school devoted to Development of Creative Industries: Strategies and Practice three of 28 participants will come from PetrSU. These are Alena Klochkova (sociologist), Maxim Mordvintsev (public and municipal management) and Anna Selina (sociologist). During the ORF summer school the best scientists and teachers of the country work with the children. We hope, that this trip will become an important event in creative development of our grant-aided students.

Delegation of PetrSU led by the President of PetrSU Victor Vasiliev has taken part in the celebration devoted to the 50th anniversary of the University of Oulu.
In a solemn atmosphere rector of the University of Oulu Professor Lauri Laynen awarded to Victor Vasiliev a bronze medal.
Official relations between PetrSU and University of Oulu were established on March 18, 1992 with signing an Agreement on Scientific and Educational Cooperation and Exchange.
The agreement on cooperation has been prolonged repeatedly, and in June, 2006 the new agreement through to 2010 was signed, assuming cooperation in the field of research activity and development of projects, extended education, organization of joint training courses, exchange of teachers and students, exchange of academic publications, support of joint publications of scientific and teaching materials, organization of scientific symposiums and conferences, etc.

On May 14 in Petrozavodsk State University hosted annual Internet-conference of the Head of Karelia. for the fifth time using almost all kinds of communication Sergey Katanandov answered questions of citizens of Karelia.
At 11 o'clock in the morning in the largest lecture room of the university there gathered students and teachers, as well as journalists of republican newspapers, TV channels and Internet editions. On large screens video-communication has been established with Belomorsk, Kostomuksha, Sortavala, Pudozh, and also with Petrozavodsk school N10 and mobile studio of Karelia State TV and Radio Company. Besides, within several weeks before the event citizens of the republic had an opportunity to ask Sergey Katanandov their questions by e-mail or through the site of bodies of the government of Karelia; during the conference of the citizens addressed their questions by phones.

Delegation of PetrSU led by the rector Professor A.V.Voronin has visited the University of Helsinki and a number of Finnish companies and organizations.
The delegation comprises the Dean of faculty of the Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture Tamara Starshova, head of the Directorate for International Cooperation Lyudmila Kulikovskaya, Deputy Director for Development of the IT-park of PetrSU Anton Shabaev.

Representative of Nordicum magazine (Scandinavian business magazine) published by the Finnish company of PubliCo Risto Valkeapää has made a working visit to PetrSU.
The purpose of his trip is getting acquainted to our university and its activities, and collecting information for the magazine. Risto Valkeapää met with the PetrSU President Victor N.Vasiliev and Director of the PetrSU-Metso Automation Systems Center Anton Shabayev. They held a presentation of the university and work of the PetrSU-Metso Center, told about cooperation with VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and development of IT-park of the university.
The guest has also met with the Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin, visited Plazma SEC, Scientific library of PetrSU and GIS department of RC NIT.

Petrozavodsk State University became a threefold winner of the Global Education international exhibition congress held in Moscow in the Crocus-Expo center from April, 17 to 19.
Our university famous for its works in formation of information educational space of the region has presented its exposition on the subject of Information Educational Environment of the Republic of Karelia.

International Seminar on Cleaner Production opened in Petrozavodsk State University.
The seminar is held within the scope of the Cleaner Production: Improvement of Professional Skills of Teachers of Russian Institutes of Higher Education project aimed at identification of needs of Russian universities on development of training in the field of so-called cleaner production according to the needs of industrial enterprises.

Dr.Sci.Tech. Mohamed Asheesh from the Oulu University of Applied Science (Finland) has started lecturing at our university.
Lectures are devoted to systems of water supply and water treatment from surface and underground sources.
The course is organized the Chair of water supply, water drain and hydraulics of the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Engineering of PetrSU and will last for three days.

Team of Petrozavodsk State University won Bronze in the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals 2008.
Team of St. Petersburg University of IT, Mechanics and Optics became the World and Europe Champion, having solved 8 of 11 problems posed. Gold Medals were also awarded to: the team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology which has won the second place and became the North American Champions, the team of Izhevsk State Technical University which has won the third place and the team of Lviv National University which has won the fourth place.

The team of Petrozavodsk State University went to Canada to participate in the 32nd └Đ╠ International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) held by the Association for Computing Machinery and sponsored by IBM.
The PetrSU team of programmers coached by Denis Vlasov, includes Ivan Arkhipov, Maxim Spirichev, Vyacheslav Medvedev.
World Finals 2008 hosted by the University of Alberta at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, Canada welcomes 100 teams of the strongest programmers from all over the world. At the championship Russia is presented by 11 universities: Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Novosibirsk State University, Stavropol State University, Ural State University, Altai State University, Orel and Izhevsk State Technical Universities, St. Petersburg University of IT, Mechanics and Optics, as well as Moscow Institute of Physics & Technology.
The World Finals is the central event of the Championship to be held on April 9.
The organizers offer to track the competitoon on-line at http://icpc.baylor.edu.
At the World championship 2007 in Tokyo Petrozavodsk programmers Denis Denisov, and brothers Alexey and Ilya Nikolaevskiy had won bronze.

Open seminar on WidSets technology, organized by in common by Nokia and Petrozavodsk State University is held at the university. The seminar's motto is źOpen future for yourself╗.
WidSets is a Nokia technology which allows to run specially created programs called Widgets. Widget is a small program which serves for creation of personal working space, entertainment, and for fast information retrieval without using of web-browsers. This technology allows to create Widgets to receive help information, and enables creating games and applications simplifying many daily operations.
The seminar opened with presentation of WidSets technology. The seminar's program also includes open lectures, seminars, demonstration of Widget's work for users and a beginners' course on development of applications.

Delegation of the Finnish city Oulu visited Petrozavodsk State University.
The delegation includes Kari Juntunen - Head of Association of communes of higher and secondary vocational education of the province of Oulu, Lauri Lanto - Rector of Oulu Polytechnic and Risto Kimari, Dean of the Engineering Faculty.
During the visit partners from Finland met with administration of PetrSU, discussed various aspects of cooperation with representatives of the Directorate for international cooperation of the university and visited Regional Center of New Information Technologies of the university.

Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov met with students and teachers of Petrozavodsk State University. The meeting concerned role of education and science in innovative development of the republic.
The cause to serious conversation regarding this issue was provided by policy statements of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the first vice-premier Dmitry Medvedev on necessity of innovations for overall modernization of life in the country, as well as wide experience of innovative activity gained by scientific and educational establishments of the region.

Winter programming training camp where gathered leading teams of universities of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Poland have opened at the university. The training camp is held within the framework of preparation of teams for the world championship 2008 in Albert, Canada.
The training camp program also includes presentations of Microsoft, Google, and Yandex companies, Cup of the Head of the Republic of Karelia competition, TopCoder SRM, Microsoft and Yandex competitions.

The first student that passed the Russian as a foreign language examination in PetrSU this year is Simon Barns-Sadler, student of the Department of Linguistics of the University of Cambridge.
Simon has come already speaking good Russian, and in four months due to living among native Russian language speakers and intensive studying of Russian in classes his knowledge has improved considerably. The student from Cambridge has passed one of the highest levels of Russian as a foreign language examinations.
The certificate he received upon passing the test testifies to both his success in language studying, and also entitles to practise a profession in Russian, for example, to work as an interpreter.

Once again Faculty of Law together with Stanford University (USA) invite students to take a free-of-charge distance learning course.
Such courses are offered a few times a year. Democracy and Leadership of Law course will start on February, 11. It will be tought on the basis distance learning with using videolectures of American teachers and work in the Internet. Convenience of such training is that in-home studying is possible.
