Another end-of-semester exams came to the end in the Russian as a Foreign Language Test Center of NEOU.
Within the period of three days foreign citizens tested their skills in reading, speaking and writing in Russian, as well as in comprehension of spoken language.
On results of the expiring year 13 citizens of foreign countries, including students from Belgium, Great Britain, South Korea and Italy, as well as a Swedish engineer and an Italian teacher who had to confirm their Russian language skills for their professional occupations have taken multilevel Russian language tests.
In 2010 tests were taken by 7 citizens of Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Nigeria who'd applied to be naturalized in Russia.
State-recognized Certificates are issued on results of the test.

Petrozavodsk State University has hosted the third TOEFL iBT™ test this year Petrozavodsk State University has hosted the third TOEFL iBT™ test this year.
Within 4 hours 10 people (senior high school students, undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities of Petrozavodsk, Murmansk and St.-Petersburg) were attesting to their knowledge and skills on the following aspects of language: reading, listening comprehension, oral and written speech (Internet-based Test).
Results of the test will be announced in the beginning of the next year.
For two months since the Test Center was established 21 test-takers from Karelia, Murmansk and Leningrad regions have taken the TOEFL test.
TOEFL certificate is necessary for students planning to study in more than 2400 of the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, as well as universities of almost all the European countries. Besides, TOEFL is often required when one applies for a job in a foreign or Russian company that has partners among international organizations.

A meeting with representatives of ÊoulutusAvain Oy company of Kajaani, Finland, was held in Petrozavodsk State University A meeting with representatives of ÊoulutusAvain Oy company of Kajaani, Finland, was held in Petrozavodsk State University.
The opportunity of preparation of a joint project within the scope of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument program focused on development of cross-border cooperation with countries of the European Union was discussed at the meeting.
The joint project will have social gender orientation: teaching women information technologies necessary for social and professional adaptation in modern society.
Director of RCNIT Natalia Ruzanova, Deputy Director of RCNIT Olga Derbenyova, expert of RCNIT N.Bogdanova, Charlady of the Karelian Center for Gender Research of the Women of Russia Movement Karelian Regional Public Organization Larisa Boichenko have taken part in the meeting.

The meeting was organized within the framework of cultural activities devoted to the Year of France in Russia.

Petrozavodsk State University takes part in the first Youth Congress of Native Minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East.
Olga Zhukova, senior lecturer of the Chair of Karelian and Vepssian Languages of the Faculty of Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture of Petrozavodsk State University, member of The Union of Vepsian Youth of Karelia Vepsan Vezad Karelian regional public organization, has taken part in the first Youth Congress of Native Minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East held in Moscow.

Senior high school students, undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers of universities of Petrozavodsk and Murmansk had 4 hours to show their knowledge and skills on such aspects as reading, auding, spoken and written language (in iBT format).

Meeting of vice-rectors of universities participating in the <I>Barents Cross-Border University</I> projectA traditional meeting of vice-rectors and representaives of working groups of the Barents Cross-Border University (BCBU) was held in Murmansk.
The agenda included issues of promotion of joint Master's programs on ecological engineering, social work, information technologies, law. There have been also discussed marketing of these programs in partner universities and admission of students to Master's programs, evaluation of the training quality.

Italians in PetrSUFor five months two students from Italy will study Russian in Petrozavodsk State University within the Erasmus Mundus / Triple I program.
This is not the first experience of cooperation between faculties of PetrSU and students of Italian universities. Since 2009 more than ten students from Finland and Italy have been trained in PetrSU within the Erasmus Mundus program.

XI Days of Medicine of Karelia in Finland XI Days of Medicine of Karelia in Finland
XI Days of Medicine of Karelia in Finland were held on October 20-21 in Polvijärvi (Finland).
More than 100 representatives of authorities, ministries and departments of public health services of Russia and Finland, medical institutions, universities and research centers of both countries have taken part in this event.
XI Days of Medicine of Karelia in FinlandDelegation of the Republic of Karelia was led by Elmira K.Zilber, Minister of Health and Social Development of the RK, PetrSU was represented by Prof. Natalya Dorshakova, Vice-rector for Research, and Luydmila Kulikovskaya, head of Directorate for international cooperation.
Participants have heard the plenary reports devoted to cross-border cooperation in the field of public health and social security of the two countries, experience and results of this cooperation, joint activity on projects. During work of the issue-related breakup groups participants have discussed urgent issues of strategic management of social security system and public health services, strengthening of primary health care, cross-border medicine, development of information technologies in medicine, health of children and teenagers, issues of intership in the Russian Federation.

The first meeting of the Working Group on Public Health of the Northern Dimension Institute was held on October 20 in Polvijärvi (Finland).
Prof. Natalya Dorshakova, Vice-rector for Research, and Luydmila Kulikovskaya, Head of Directorate for International Cooperation, have taken part in work of the Group.
The meeting participants have discussed organizational issues, as well as the overall goals and the ways of working.
Vice-rector Natalya Dorshakova, member of the Steering Group of the Northern Dimension Institute, has made a presentation of PetrSU's project ideas related to problems of prevalence of diseases among the population of northern regions. Members of the Group have pointed out urgency and importance of PetrSU's project initiatives.

Joint project of Petrozavodskmash JSC and PetrSU is the winner of the open public competition for selection of organizations for the right to receive grants for implementation of complex projects in hi-tech production.
The project title is Creation of Resource-Saving Production of Ecologically Safe Transportation and Packing Kits for Storage and Transportation of Spent Nuclear Fuel.

International conference of regional political figures of the Barents Euro-Arctic RegionInternational conference of regional political figures of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region organized by Murmansk Regional Duma was held in Murmansk.
More than 80 participants from Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia have taken part in the conference.
They discussed priorities of Barents cooperation for 2010-2013, economic and infrastructural needs of the Barents Region, development of scientific and educational potential of the region, preservation of indigenous peoples.

Finnmark University College (Norway) became a venue for the seminar devoted to the Cross-Border Entrepreneurs - Learning in the Barents Region project planning.
Representatives of Universities of Murmansk and Kemi-Tornio (Finland), Petrozavodsk State University and Finnmark University College have taken part in the seminar.
Besides discussion of the project, the meeting participants have desided to sign the agreement on cooperation with Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences and to continue cooperation with Finnmark University College.

Students of the Faculty of Philology of Jagiellonian University, Kracow, visit PetrSU.
This is the third visit of Polish students to PetrSU. A long time ago they became interested in Russian language: they study it and improve their skills. Students have attended lectures of Professor E.Neyolov on the subject of Russian Fairy Tale, presentation lectures on Traditional Folklore of the Russian North, meetings with teachers and students of the Faculty of Philology, have seen the sights of Petrozavodsk. Students admired unique heroes of Russian fairy tales and bylinas.
By the way, Jagiellonian University is one of the oldest in Europe, it has more than 40,000 students, and its Faculty of Philology is the largest faculty of the university.

In August Otava, one of the leading publishing houses of Finland, released a new book Vihollisen selustassa. Paamajan tiedustelu Neuvosto-Karjalassa 1939-1944 (In the Enemy's Rear. Finnish Investigation in Eastern Karelia in 1939-1944) (Helsinki, 2010).
Authors of the book are senior lecturer of the Military Academy of Defensive Forces of Finland and of the University of Oulu Eero Elfvengren, Philosophy Doctor, teacher and research fellow of the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu) Matti Kosonen, Philosophy Licentiate, and senior research fellow of the International Education and Research Center of the Faculty of History of PetrSU Einar Laidinen, Ph.D. in History.

Petrozavodsk State University has held the IX International Research and Technology Conference New Information Technologies in Pulp-and-Paper Industry and Power Industry.
The conference was organized by PetrSU and largest Russian enterprises of pulp-and-paper industry.
Experts in automation and new information technologies (NIT), representatives of the largest pulp-and-paper enterprises of Russia, specialized branch organizations, as well as Finnish universities have taken part in work of the conference that was devoted to consideration of issues related to automated control system for technological processes and enterprise resource planning system.

William Elliott, Consul General of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Saint Petersburg, has visited the IT-park of Petrozavodsk State University.
For the Consul-General of the UK there has been prepared a presentation on history, structure and activity of PetrSU and its IT-park, cooperation between PetrSU and European universities, including universities in the UK, as well as educational and scientific programs offered at the Northern-European Open University of PetrSU.
Mr.Elliott has got acquainted with work of the harvester simulator used to train operators of the most advanced forestry machines by Ponsse Plc company, visited a department of students' business-incubator where he has tested a new mobile Internet-computer N900, a laboratory of wireless systems where he was offered an exposition of location systems and the PetrSU-Metso Automation Systems Center.

Professor Dipl. Math. Dr.phil.habil. Andreas Pester, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Systems Design of Carinthia University of Applies Science (Austria) visits PetrSU.
During his visit Dr. Pester has got acquainted with history of the university in the museum of history of PetrSU, has taken a tour on the scientific library, RCNIT and IT-park of the university.
In the Directorate for international cooperation there has been held a meeting concerning joint project activity where the parties discussed both running projects, and prospects for the further cooperation between the universities.
In conclusion, Dr. Pester has held an open lecture for employees, teachers and students of PetrSU On-line experiments in education - present and trends of the future.

It has become a good tradition that in the beginning of the academic year Petrozavodsk State University welcomes international students.
In September there have arrived two students from Italy - Francheska Moretti and Elisa Saccini (University of Bologna, Faculty of Modern Languages for Interpreters).
Both girls are participants of Erasmus Mundus / Triple I international program and within the next five months they will take classes in the Faculty of Philology combining lectures and seminars with classes of Russian as a foreign language at the Northern-European Open University of PetrSU.

The IVth "Information Ånvironment of Higher Educational Institutions of the XXI century" International workshop conferenceThe IVth Information Ånvironment of Higher Educational Institutions of the XXI century International workshop conference opened on September 21 on the basis of Petrozavodsk State University. The conference was dated for the 70th anniversary of PetrSU.
At opening participants of the conference were welcomed by the President of PetrSU Victor Vasilev, director of RCNIT Natalya Ruzanova, Head of Petrozavodsk urban district Nikolay Levin.
Program of the conference includes plenary and break-up group reports, master-classes, round table discussions.
Within the scope of the conference there has been held a master-class of CISCO Systems educational center for teachers of computer science on the subject of Fundamentals of CISCO network technologies for institutions of general education.
There has been also held the Oracle in Higher Education 2010 working meeting with participation of members of the All-Russian Association of Higher Educational Institutions who use Oracle, representatives of Oracle Corporation, FORS Development Center and interested representatives of other institutions of higher education of the Russian Federation, the CIS and foreign countries.

On September 16-17, 2010 Archangelsk hosted a regular meeting of the Joint Working Group for Education and Research of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region (BEAR).
Issues discussed at the meeting concerned cooperation between the universities and business communities of the Barents Region. Representatives of Institutions of Higher Education from Archangelsk, Murmansk, Petrozavodsk, Syktyvkar, as well as foreign partners from the University of Tromsø (Norway) and University of Lapland (Finland) have taken part in the discussion.
The speakers have presented experience of cooperation projects with business structures, exchanged opinions on opportunities and prospects of development of entrepreneurship of institutions of higher education.
In conclusion of the two-day work there was adopted a resolution pointinmg out necessity to strengthen cooperation between of institutions of higher education and businessstructures, importance of implementation of the joint innovative projects meeting the requirements of modern development of the North of Europe.

PetrSU was a venue for the seminar within the scope of the Entrepreneurship in Education project under the aegis of the program of cooperation between Nordic countries and Russia.
This was the third meeting within the scope of this project among which participants there are also representatives of the University of Mikkeli (Finland), Business college of Odense (Denmark), Karelian Regional Institute of Management, Economics and law.
On the agenda there were the issues related to discussion of potential partners and donors for the future project, prospect of expansion and strengthening of cooperation between the universities, development of new programs in entrepreneurship in view of features of the system of higher education in Russia, Finland and Denmark.

Teachers and students of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences welcome guests from Germany
The Faculty was visited by Ass.Professor Dennis Grubber (coordinator of DAAD exchange programs, SPbSU) and Professor Heiko Schreder (University of Magdeburg, Germany). The guests have told about opportunities of training in institutions of higher education of Germany within the framework of DAAD exchange programs. There has also been held a meeting of German delegation with representatives of the International Centre of Science and Educational of the faculty, representatives of chairs sociology and social work where opportunities of joint projects were discussed.

Visit of delegation of Finland led by Finland's Minister for Foreign Trade Paavo Väyrynen to the IT park of PetrSUDelegation of representatives of business community of Finland led by Finland's Minister for Foreign Trade Paavo Väyrynen visited the IT park of PetrSU.
The delegation comprised representatives of the Government of Finland, as well as heads of more than 20 Finnish companies engaged in logging and woodworking, power engineering, information and communication technologies, mechanical engineering, logistics, construction, service, environment protection.

The ceremony of solemn closing of the Collegiate programming training camp was held in PetrSU.
President of the university Victor Vasiliev and director of the the Club of Creativity of Programmers of PetrSU Vladimir Kuznetsov congratulated the teams on completion of their work.
On results of the training the team of SPb University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics-1 (Isenbayev, Melnikov, Kapun) topped the overall standings with the score of 183.30 points, the team of Nizhniy Novgorod State University (Yepifanov, Vadimov, Shmelev) with 140.38 points was the second best, and the team of Moscow State University (Rogulenko, Kaluzhin, Feodorov) with 140.36 points is the last of the three leaders.

September 03, 2010 Joint project on biofuel: PetrSU and FinlandJoint project on biofuel: PetrSU and Finland
For many years Faculty of Forest Engineering supports active cooperation with Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla). Currently work is conducted regarding joint project on development of timber harvesting in view of use of production wastes for biofuel and research of transport logistics. On the part of Petrozavodsk State University the project is supervised by Professor Vladimir Syunev, Doctor of Technical Engineering.
In August in Joensuu young scientists from PetrSU and Finnish Forest Research Institute carried out joint research in the sphere of bio-energetics and logistics of timber harvesting, visited enterprises producing modern equipment for generation of bio-energy, seminars on bio-energetics, exhibitions of modern machines and equipment for bio-energy generation, modelled technical tasks, and prepared joint articles for publication.
A seminar for representatives of the Russian and Finnish business will be held in the end of September in Podporozhie, Leningrad region, to present intermediate results of the research. In the future they will comprise a manual for students to be released in 2011.

From June to August students from Europe, Asia, North America and Australia devoted their vacation to studying Russian language, literature, history and culture of Russia and Republic of Karelia.

 

August 26, 2010 From August, 26 to September, 5 Petrozavodsk State University became a venue for traditional summer international collegiate programming training camp.
116 young programmers of 36 teams from 20 universities of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan take part in it. Most of participating teams are the strongest in Russia, representatives of such universities, as St.-Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (University ITMO), St.-Petersburg State University, Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

 

August 23, 2010 On August 21-28, 2010 Petrozavodsk State University held the II international Russian-Danish Summer School of comparative jurisprudence organized by the Faculty of Law of PetrSU together with the University of Southern Denmark (Syddansk Universitet).
15 Danish students and teachers as well as students and teachers of the Faculty of Law of PetrSU were the school participants.

This week a group of students from Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain got acquainted with various historical and natural sights of Karelia.
Foreign students have visited islands of Kizhi and Valaam, as well as the famous Kivach waterfall.

In the beginning of August PetrSU welcomed new students from universities of Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, Italy, Germany who came to learn within various programs including regional studies, history and culture, Russian language and literature.

 

July 16, 2010 International students study Russian at the North-European Open University (NEOU) of PetrSU within the scope of the Summer University.
This year to study Russian in PetrSU there came students from all over the world: Sweden, Italy, South Korea, Finland, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Spain, Australia, Germany. All of them take different programs according to their background knowledge.

 

July 13, 2010 Efficiency of methods forest exploitation, problems of forestry and reforestation perfection were discussed by participants of the Russian-Finnish meeting held in the capital of Karelia. Representatives of PetrSU have also taken part in it.

Petrozavodsk State University and Petrozavodskmash JSC signed the Agreement on strategic partnership

Petrozavodsk State University and Petrozavodskmash JSC signed the Agreement on strategic partnershipHistory of cooperation between the main institution of higher education of Karelia and the largest engineering company of the republic totals several decades. Petrozavodskmash JSC used to be one of the head enterprises for the Faculty of Forest Engineering since its establishing, students of the university worked on probation at the factory, conducted joint research and development.

Petrozavodsk State University and Petrozavodskmash JSC signed the Agreement on strategic partnershipThis year Petrozavodskmash JSC became a part of the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) and the AtomEnergoMash holding which is the main body of the engineering division of Rosatom. Therefore, product mix produced by the enterprise extends, the enterprise opens new workplaces, its need for skilled specialists – from machine operators to managers – grows. Namely, there occurs need for specialists of a new level skilled in the art of modern industrial technologies and methods.

Petrozavodsk State University and Petrozavodskmash JSC signed the Agreement on strategic partnershipThere occurs a pressing need for closer integration of science and production. Therefore, the decision was made to sign the new Agreement on strategic partnership between Petrozavodskmash JSC and PetrSU, which priority sphere is effective engineering industry development, including nuclear.

One of provisions of the new Agreement is establishing a Coordination Council to be in charge of development of perspective and annual plans of teamwork, as well as analysis and summarizing of cooperation. Creation of Youth Design Office in the line of Petrozavodskmash's work is another provision of the Agreement. The document assumes a broad sphere for cooperation: joint research and developmental works, career guidance for students and schoolchildren, participation in exhibitions, conferences and other scientific and technical activities.

The 90th Anniversary of the Republic of Karelia
commemorative token award ceremony was held in the Government of the republic.

Among the award recipients there were Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin, President of PetrSU Victor Vasiliev, Counsellor to the Administration of PetrSU Natalia Ruzanova, Head of the Chair of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Anatoly Zilber, Head of the Chair of National History (post-revolutionary period) Mikhail Shumilov .

All the award recipients are distinguished people famous both in Karelia, and far beyond, rewarded for their exceeding labor contribution to development of our republic.

Participation of teachers from PetrSU in work of the XIV Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society (IDS)Naples became the venue for the XIV Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society (IDS) in which about 120 scientists from 25 countries of the world - Russia, USA, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, the Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Canada, Latvia, Macedonia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, France, Czechia, Switzerland, Estonia, Japan have taken part.

Participation of teachers from PetrSU in work of the XIV Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society (IDS)The XIV International Symposium on the subject of Dostoevsky – Philosophical Mind, Writer’s Eye was organized by University of Naples (Universita degli Studi di Napoli «L’Orientale») and Italian Institute of Philosophical Research (Naples) (Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici, Napoli) at the support of Russian Humanitarian Scientific Fund, Russian Foundation for Basic Research and Russkiy Mir Foundation.
Program of the Symposium included a plenary session, work of three breakup groups and five round table discussions.

Participation of teachers from PetrSU in work of the XIV Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society (IDS)During the Symposium there has also been held a presentation of books published at PetrSU. These were the eighth volume of the complete set of Dostoevsky's works (editor-in-chief Vladimir Zakharov) and the first issue of the collection of Problems of Dostoevsky's Textual Criticism released at active participation of researchers of the Web-laboratory and textual group.
The symposium participants have rated high results of Petrosavodsk reserachers of Dostoevsky's works. Summing up the forum, V.Borisova from Ufa has pointed out that "PetrSU is a stronghold of our science, as it is the source of things new and essential." William Todd, Professor of Harvard University, told that The Concordances of All Dostoevsky's Works prepared at PetrSU help him a lot in his teaching.

The next symposium for the first time will be held in 2013 in Moscow, Russia.

Cooperation agreement between PetrSU and Ponsse Oyj

On June 21, 2010 PetrSU and Ponsse Plc company, Finland, signed an agreement on joint training of future experts that will operate modern forestry machinery – harvesters and forwarders.
The agreement was signed by Anatoly Voronin, Rector of Petrozavodsk State University, and Juho Nummela, President and CEO of Ponsse Oyj.
Within the scope of cooperation on its basis PetrSU will train qualified scientists and engineers that will operate modern forestry machinery – harvesters and forwarders; it is also supposed to establish the PetrSU – Ponsse international center of forestry machinery.
There will take place training seminars, conferences for directirs, chief engineers and experts of logging enterprises with demonstration of timber harvesting by Ponsse harvesters and forwarders.

The special clause of the agreement provides propagation of learning efficiency of forestry machinery operators on Ponsse simulators, forwarders and harvesters in regions of the Russian Federation.
When the agreement was signed, during the following meeting, its participants have poited out that the issue of professional training for modern wood forestry machinery is one of the most actual for Karelia today, without its solution it is impossible to suggest enhancement of quality efficiency of cutting area work on woodland pieces in Karelia.
We hope that cooperation within the agreement signed between Petrozavodsk State University and Ponsse Oyj will guarantee effective development of logging industry in Karelia.

Petrozavodsk State University and Ponsse Plc company have launched joint training of future experts for forest industry of Karelia.
The most popular today is assortment wood harvesting involving a harvester+forwarder set of machines. These machines solve many optimization problems of assortment production. Modern forestry machines are not cheap, however, their productivity pays back ample amends for purchase costs, machine-tending and, of course, professional training.

Experts in PetrSU consider that this problem is among the most daunting in forest industry of our republic. The first stage of work on training qualified scientists and engineers for forest industry of Karelia is performed at Petrozavodsk State University.

Ponsse Plc company from Finland became the PetrSU's serious partner. In the near future it is planned to open a joint Center of the Finnish company and Petrozavodsk State University.

Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks to launch the R&D Laboratory on the basis of PetrSU
Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks announce opening of research laboratory established in cooperation with Petrozavodsk State University. Principal directions of the laboratory's activity are open software development on Maemo/Meego, Symbian platforms, research in the sphere of Smart Spaces and Mix-reality.
Cooperation between Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks and PetrSU was launched in spring 2008. Now in the laboratory there work more than 30 researchers including students, post-graduate students and professors supervised by experts Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks.

One of the most recent laboratory's developments is MySocials service providing direct simultaneous access on Maemo/Meego platform to services of several social networks. Currently this product is the only client application for OS Maemo providing access to the Russia's most popular network vkontakte. Another new laboratory's profile is studying new models of communication between human being and information systems on the basis of analysis of concentration of visual attention. Opening of the laboratory in Petrozavodsk, placing of the first orders and joint curriculums are an important step within the scope of development of strategic partnership between Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks and Petrozavodsk State University.

PetrSU participated on the "Economy of Karelia: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" exhibition devoted to the anniversary of the republic. The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Economic Development of the republic was ranked the most scale exhibition project in the region, as about 120 exhibitors representing all the economy of the region took part in it.
Victor Zubkov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, who was at the head of the Steering Committee on preparation for the anniversary of the republic from the moment of its establishing in February, 2009, and supervised all the course of the preparation personally visited the exhibition.
Getting acquainted with the exhibits presented, Victor Zubkov stayed a little longer at stands of the IT-park of PetrSU representing principal directions of the university's activity.
It was no coincidence that six posters of the university have drawn First Deputy Prime Minister's attention, as stable economic future of any country is its educated experts, and PetrSU as a recognized largest multidisciplinary classical university in the Northwest of Russia, to no small degree fills the labour market of the country with qualified scientists and engineers.

On June 2 Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has handed out federal and republican awards to 36 citizens of the republic their honest work and great contribution to cultural, scientific, social and economic development of the republic. The ceremony coincided with the anniversary of the republic.
State awards of the Russian Federation were conferred on 18 citizens of the republic. According to the decree of the President of Russia, Anatoly Voronin, Rector of Petrozavodsk State University, was awarded with the Order of Friendship.

Awards and titles in honour of the 90th anniversary of KareliaTwo awards were presented to Natalya Ruzanova, director of the regional center of new information technologies of Petrozavodsk State University. Besides the rank of the Honourable citizen of Karelia, according to the Decree of the President of Russia Natalya Ruzanova has received the Order of Honour.

On May 31, 2010 St.-Petersburg State Polytechnical University became the venue of the session of the Council of the Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University (CBU).
Representatives of universities of East Finland, Helsinki, Tampere, Lappeenranta Technological University, St.-Petersburg State University, St.-Petersburg State Forest-Technical Academy, European University in St.-Petersburg and Petrozavodsk State University which takes an acticve part in this project since 2004 participated in the session.

Cooperation prospects between PetrSU and Norwegian province of Troms were discussed on May 28, 2010 at the meeting of Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin and the Troms County Council Chairman Ms Pia Svensgård. She also chairs the Regional Commettee of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region.

The team of programmers from PetrSU Ni hao, panda! became the only Russia’s representative at the Xth Challenge24 international 24-hour programming contest held in Budapest.
The team comprised student of the Faculty of Mathematics Ilya Nikolayevsky, coach of PetrSU’s programming teams Denis Vlasov, as well as the graduate of Saratov State University Ivan Romanov.
The team from PetrSU Ni hao, panda! stands 10th among the 28 teams in the Xth Challenge24 international 24-hour programming contest.
The winner is rusty team from Poland. The second is Hungarian team Grötzsch men, the third is Warm Apple Pie - Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic).

An evening with famous Russian writer, modern classic, Vladimir Makanin was held in the reading room of the Scientific library of PetrSU.
For many years PetrSU is keeping up with the tradition to invite writers, creative people. Students, teachers, employees of university always welcome such meetings and are happy to attend them.
Vladimir Makanin answered questions, told interesting real-life stories and about hard work of being a writer.
During the meeting the organizing committee of the Big Book National Literary Award has presented the Scientific library of PetrSU with Vladimir Makanin's books with his autographes, as well as books of modern Russian authors including A.Baldin, A.Volos, O.Slavnikova.
During his visit to PetrSU Vladimir Makanin had a meeting with the Rector of the university Professor A.Voronin, and has had a talk with journalists of the Karelian mass-media.

The exhibition is devoted to the annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe, celebrated on the 9th of May, and is aimed at disseminating information about Europe and the European Union. It is located in the reading room of our library and is open to all comers.
You can find literature and informational material on history and culture of Europe, European integration, history of education and development of the EU, educational opportunities in Europe, cooperation between the EU and Russia, etc.

Solemn events for veterans on the 65th Anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War were organized in Petrozavodsk State University.
PSU has traditionally welcomed the veterans.
As recognized by the veterans themselves, each meeting in the PSU is a long-awaited opportunity not only to meet again with the wartime comrades, but also to see how changing and growing native university, the place of their study and work in the postwar period, became.
On behalf of entire staff of the University, PetrSU Rector Anatoly Voronin, and PetrSU President Viktor Vasiliev congratulated and wished good health for years to come. "The war becomes farther and farther away from us, but the society studies its lessons until now, the goal of the current generation is to convey these lessons further into the centuries, in order hardships of war would never repeat again", - said Anatoliy Voronin.

The internship for the Russian experts on the subject "Managing for research and development as well as technology transfer on the USA example" was held as part of foreign visitors’ reception program, funded by the U.S. State Department.
Eight Russian citizens from Vladivostok, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Samara and from Petrozavodsk were selected to participate in this project.

The conference was organized by the Economic Faculty of Petrozavodsk State University with support from the Russian Oxford Fund. It was attended by leading economists of Moscow State University and the Institute for Socio-Economic Problems of Population Sciences, students of economic specialties and young scientists from 15 universities of Russia.
According to the words of professor N.M. Rimashevskaya, Corresponding Member of RAS, Academician of RANS, director of the Laboratory of gender issues of Institute for Socio-Economic Problems of Population Sciences, this conference has become a very successful experience for its participants.

As a result the combined team of PetrSU led by its main coach Denis Vlasov and the repeated medallist of the world championships, senior student of the Faculty of Mathematics Denis Denisov has won 3 diplomas.
Valery Filev became the prize-winner among the eleventh graders, Vitaly Lagunov became the prize-winner among the tenth graders, and Kirill Martynov became the winner among ninth graders.

The first working meeting of participants of the People Separated by the Border Russian-Finnish research project was held in PetrSU.
The project has won the grant in the competition of scientific projects on history organized by the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Foundation and the Academy of Finland in 2009.
Among the ten participants of the project six represent the Faculty of History of PetrSU, two are from the Faculty of History of St.Petersburg State University, others are invited from the Russian State Historical Archive (St.Petersburg) and Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Participation of PetrSU in the meeting of the Joint Working Group on Education and Research of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region, JWGERSyktyvkar State University was a venue for the meeting of the Joint Working Group on Education and Research, JWGER. In May, 2009 Petrozavodsk State University was adopted to act as its regional chair.
Representatives of 14 institution of higher professional education of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region have taken part in work of the Group.
Participants of session have discussed guidelines of the Barents program for 2009-2013 and made suggestions regarding the plan of its implementation. The meeting was prepared and held by the Head of Directorate for International Cooperation Lyudmila Kulikovskaya and Deputy Head of Directorate for International Cooperation Olga Zvyagina.
The next meeting of JWGER is scheduled to be held in September, 2010 in Archangelsk.

Cooperation between PetrSU and Saint-Gobain Group is conducted within the framework of the tripartite Agreement on strategic partnership concluded by the Government of the RK, Administration of Petrozavodsk urban district and Saint-Gobain Construction Products Rus Ltd in September of 2009. The Agreement is aimed at introduction of modern building technologies and modernization of the building industry of Karelia.

Petrozavodsk State University has become the venue for the IIIrd workshop conference of young researchers of faculties of social sciences "The Modern State and Global Security" in which participated Faculties of Political and Social Science, Economics, Law and History of PetrSU.
Participants of the plenary session have considered issues of globalization of the world and national security, politics and power in the epoch of globalization, factors of national security of the state in the modern world, having also discussed the degree of geopolitic cooperation between Russia and the European Union.
On March, 24 within the scope of the conference there has been held a round table on the subject of Political Aspects of Modernization in the Russian Society organized by Petrozavodsk State University and Political Science Academy (PSA).

The representatives of Petrozavodsk State University took part at the meeting of Tempus project members, which was organized by Tempus European commission in Brussels.
During the meeting the practical issues of project management were discussed.
Petrozavodsk State university was represented by Ljudmila Kulikovskaya, the head of the Directorate for International Cooperation

Within the framework of the FIRST program Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, Finland, hosted the International Days 2010.
PetrSU was represented there by the director of the EU Information Centre of PetrSU A.Kuznetsova and the chief of the Registration Office of the Directorate for International Cooperation of PetrSU N.Kravchenkova who have made speeches and given the university presentations.
Participation in this event has made it possible to expand opportunities for international academic cooperation, to establish new contacts with universities of Estonia, Lithuania, Belgium, Chyprus, Great Britain and Germany, and to make presentation of Petrozavodsk State University and the Republic of Karelia on the international level.

On the 12th of March the Full Professor Sergey Chernov, the Dean of Law faculty of PetrSU, and A. Larichev, Associate Professor, the Head of the Center of International Relations of Law faculty, took part in BCBU working party devoted to the shaping of collaborative law master program.
During the working meeting in Rovaniemi it’s decided to start laying down new program, based on existing BCSU programs, according to which the partners develop common modules (courses) for students. The final goal of the project is to shape uniform pull of common courses, after taking of which students could get diploma supplement which proves their participation in the project.
It was also decided to form the uniform data-base of academic and research tasks of partners and common data-base of training courses in English.
As PetrSU has licensed master programs in the sphere of Jurisprudence, the Law faculty initiated the process of the shaping of collaborative law masters program, invited a number of concerned universities and organized the first meeting in November, 2009.
The Law department of our university will be the leading partner of the project from Russian side and will start the realization of the project since September, 2010.

The annual Barents Cross-Border University (BCBU) meetings of rectors were held in Rovaniemi (Finland). The rectors of Rovaniemi and Oulu Universities (Finland), Narvik University (Norway), universities, Archangelsk and Murmansk Institutions of Higher Education and Karelian State Pedagogical Academy took part in it. Petrozavodsk State University was represented by Professor Vladimir Syunev, Vice-rector for Education.
He informed the other members about the process of introduction of a two-tier system of education and the new master’s programs licensing, as well as about the innovations in the sphere of cooperation between our university, business and society.
Traditionally the representatives of PetrSU participated in two programs – Comparative social work and IT, while during this meeting our university was active in the other three sections - Circumpolar Health and Well-being, Environmental Engineering and Jurisprudence too.

Professor Alexandr Voronin, the rector of PetrSU, together with Professor Vladinir Solovjev, the rector of Petrozavodsk State conservatory, welcomed the delegation of Shanghai Pedagogical university (China).
The delegation, consisted of the directors of sub-divisions of the university, was headed by Li Tzin, the president of it.
A number of representatives of our university, including Viktor Vasiviev, the President of PetrSU, Natalia Ruzanova, the Head of RCNIT and Ludmila Kulikoskaya, the Head of Directorate for International Cooperation, took part in the meeting.

Full Professor Mark Burkin, the head of  Psychiatry chair of PetrSU, took part in the International conference, devoted to the dissemination of the results of of Karelian-Finnish joint project “Bring health to schools”.
He presented textbook for 7th form pupils “Studying how to be healthy” and teaching recommendations.

The 5th Scientific-methodical conference "Universities in the educational space in the region: the experience, tradition and innovation" was opened with awards ceremony.
Professor Victor Vasiliev, the president of PetrSU, rewarded the rector of Oulu university Lauri Laiunen, Perttu Vartilainen, the rector of East Finland University, and Matti Uusitupe, the Professor of East Finland University, who was the rector of Kuopio university until January, 2010, with the diplomas of Honorary Doctorate of Petrozavodsk State University.

During the official visit of the rectors of Finnish universities the Agreement on cooperation and joint activities between Petrozavodsk State University and the University of Eastern Finland was signed.
The Agreement regulates the participation of teachers and students in collaborative research, exchange of educational programs, development of joint educational programs, joint workshops conferences and symposiums.
The university of Eastern Finland was founded in January, 2010, after the University of Kuopio and the University of Joensu were consolidated. PetrSU started to cooperate with the University of Joensu since 1970th, and with the University of Kuopio since 1980th, so the Agreement signed on the 15th of February, 2010, appears to be the continuation of previous contracts with Finnish universities.

The meeting of the Rector of Petrozavodsk State University, Professor Anatoly Voronin, and the representatives of Norwegian educational and research institutions was hosted in Petrozavodsk State University.
The participants of the meeting discussed issues of cooperation and joint activities in various European programs aimed to promote research projects, academic mobility, training bachelors, masters and PhDs.

Representatives of Petrozavodsk State University participated in the presentation of the scientific activity of Finnish Forest Research Institute ( METLA), which was held at the Embassy of Finland in Moscow.
The representatives of Russian business, science and governmental forests organizations, as well as the leaders of Finnish companies, operating on the territory of Russia, were invited to take part in the presentation.
A number of METLA current researches and the platform for establishing possible business contacts in Russia were the main topics of the presentation.

International School of Russian-Finnish cross-border university was organized in Petrozavodsk State University since the 8th till the 12th of January.
The lecturers for students were read by Professor Martti Penton, (University of Kuopio, Finland) and Ph.D., Associate Professor of Computer Science of PetrSU Olga Bogoyavlenskaya.
The welcome speech was pronounced by Vice-rector for Education, Professor, Doctor of Technical Engineering, Vladimir Syunev.
The course of Professor Martti Penton «Data Security - cryptographic basis» reveals the most important cryptosystem secret key (AES, Blowfish), public-key cryptosystem (RSA, Elliptic Curves) and hash methods (MD5, SHA), as well as the various authentication protocols (Kerberos, X.509) and software data security (ssh, SET, IPsec, VPN etc). Professor Martti Penton also presented textbook recommended for this theme: "Cryptography and network security» by W. Stallings.
Lectures of Olga Bogoyavlenskaya are devoted to the advanced performance analysis of various wireless technologies and mobile data, as well as considering the performance in the interaction of physical (IEEE 802) and transport (TCP) levels on wireless lines.

The Wx team of Petrozavodsk State University has won silver medals in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2010 in Harbin (China).
Our congratulations to Karelian programmers, their coach Denis Vlasov and heads of Karelian delegation in Harbin - President of the University Professor Victor Vasiliev and Professor Vladimir Kuznetsov on their success!

Professor Anatoly Voronin, the Rector of Petrozavodsk State University, had a meeting with the Rector of the University of Stockholm, K&oring;re Bremer.
The leaders discussed the development of institutions of higher education in Russia and Sweden, priorities and perspectives for further development of both universities, the possibility of the University of Stockholm entering the Joint Working Group on Education and Research (JWGER), as well as joint cooperation in various academic fields.

On-line meeting of the members of the Joint Task Group on Education and Research in the Barents region took place in the Directorate for International Cooperation. The meeting was attended by representatives of 7 universities of the Barents region.
They discussed a number of issues concerning the conduct of joint educational projects: the goals of educational projects, project financing etc. The report on the work of the Group in 2009 and the work plan for 2010 were approved at the meeting.
