Consulate General of the Kingdom of Norway in St.-Petersburg extended gratitude to the university, Solveig youth club and the Petrozavodsk University newspaper for successful participation in the International year of Edward Grieg in Karelia and popularization of music of this composer among young people. Letters of thanks were signed by the Consul General Mr Otto H. Mamelund.

A round table on the subject of theRegional Strategy of Development of Small and Medium Business on the Basis of Effective Utilization of e-Business Modern Information Technologies was held at the university.
It was organized by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic of Karelia, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the RK and the Regional center of new information technologies (RCNIT) of PetrSU at the support of the E-skills II (E-skills for Russian Small and Medium Enterprises) project of the EU.

The teacher of Polish language from Warsaw Magdalena Fido and students of the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU prepare for Polish Christmas.
Could the students of the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU imagine they would be participants of folk Polish Christmas holidays this year? They have never even though of it! But it happened that under the invitation of the Polish Culture Society Jadviga and at the support of the Head of Directorate for international cooperation L.Kulikovskaya teacher of Polish language pani Magdalena Fido came to Petrozavodsk from Warsaw.
In coordination with the management of the Faculty of Philology Pani Magdalenav was given an opportunity of teaching Polish as a Slavic language in two groups of the third-year students.

A conference-seminar of Vice rectors on international relations and heads of international services of Russian educational establishments of Higher vocational training has passed in Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) under the initiative of the Federal Agency on Education.
About three hundred representatives of Russian institutes of higher education participated in the conference. PetrSU was represented by the Head of Directorate for international cooperation L.Kulikovskaya.

Vice-Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in St.-Petersburg Voichek Jablonski, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries of the University of Warmia and Mazuri (Olsztyn) Malgorzata Wozniak and head of the Cultural Center of this university and Kortowo song and dance ensemble Boguslaw Wozniak, which gave a concert in Petrozavodsk, visited Petrozavodsk State University.
The university guests have made an excursion over the campus on Lomonosov street, in RCNIT of PetrSU and have visited the Scientific library.

Individual scholarship certificates of the Oxford Russia Fund were received this academic year by students of six faculties of PetrSU representing the humanities and social and economic specialities.
Certificates were handed over to ninety one scholars by the PetrSU Rector Professor Anatoly Voronin and Vice Rector for Education Associate Professor Anatoly Lopukha.

For his outstanding contribution to preservation of historical and cultural heritage of Russia Academician of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, director of the scientific research institute of historical and theoretical problems of national architecture of Petrozavodsk State University Vyacheslav Orfinsky is awarded with the academician Dmitry Likhachev premium in the Preservation of Monuments of History and Culture nomination.
This premium was founded in 2006 by the Government of St.-Petersburg together with the Dmitry Likhachev Foundation. The first ceremony of its delivery has passed during celebrating the academician's centenary. Subsequently the award is supposed to become annual and will allow to provide ountenance and financial support for those who work in this sphere.

The team of PetrSU programmers is qualified for the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals among universities to be held in Banff (Canada) in the beginning of April next year.
Petrozavodsk State University was represented by a team of students of the sixth grade of the Faculty of Mathematics Maxim Spirichev and Ivan Arhipov, and post-graduate student Vyacheslav Medvedev. They have returned from St.-Petersburg where in the Palace of Youth Creativity on Fontanka where the Team Programming Contest of Russia and the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest passed. University teams of programmers from the CIS countries have also taken part in the competition.

Karelia is in the "golden seven" among the regions of Russia on informatization standards.
In recent years much attention was paid to development of information technologies in Karelia. As a whole, on readiness for information society among the regions of Russia in the rating of 2005-2006 our republic has moved from the tenth place to the seventh and has become a member of the gold seven.
Among low budget regions, on informatization development Karelia wins the first place confidently among other Russian regions.

Two citizens of Vietnam Do Thi Ngan and Kieu Ngok An have successfully passed the state testing in the Russian language testing center of NEOU of PetrSU and were issued Certificates of a standard pattern of the Ministry of Education and Science of the RF.
Such examination checks readiness of claimants to Russian citizenship for socialization in the Russian society.
Successful passing of the state testing testifies to competence in oral and written forms of Russian language on the level sufficient for communication in the language environment.

 

November 26-27, 2007

In the University of Turku (Finland) there pssed a seminar devoted to problems of quality of education.
University of Turku is the coordinator of the project on quality in which a number of the Russian and Finnish universities participate. The project goal is development of academic mobility and application of systems of quality both in Russian, and in Finnish systems of higher education.
Head of the department exchange and educational programs G.Parihina participated in the seminar on the part of PetrSU.

PetrSU held the Sides of Cooperation anniversary seminar devoted to the 75 anniversary of Professor Lev Suni and the 15 anniversary of Laboratory on the problems of the Scandinavian countries and Finland.
The seminar was held within the scope of the IV regional scientific-methods conference on the subject of Universities in Educational Space of the Region: Experience, Traditions and Innovations which was summing up its results on that day.

In Moscow under the aegis of the Delegation of the European Commission in Russia there passed a meeting of Information Centers of the European Union in coincidence with training on work with information retrieval systems of the EU.
Petrozavodsk State University was represented by the director of Center of European Documentation Anastasia Kuznetsova and head of the Department of informatization of library processes of the Scientific Library of PetrSU Marina Baiduzha.

The Solveig youth club held another international meeting. Its subject stated as The Great Britain and the USA: Differences and Similarities was rather interesting. Presentations have prepared and made by young representatives of these countries taught in Petrozavodsk State University.
Seriously and precisely about university education and social life of students in the USA, in an unusual and bright way - about the city-festival of Las Vegas. Cheerfully and vividly - about world stereotypes of attitude to Britain, features of pronunciation of various dialects, about national habits and English humour.
Interested persons could try traditional entertainments and play American and English games.

The students who came to Petrozavodsk State University from the Western Europe within exchange programs visited the unique in Russia academic Archeologic museum in Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Science.
International students who came to our university within exchange programs from Belgium and Finland, in their classes study grammar, learn phonetics, read texts and discuss vital topics with teachers.

November 16-17, 2007

Representatives of the Directorate for international cooperation of PetrSU participated in work of organizational committee of ENDEAVOUR project held in Sanio University (Italy).
During the meeting roles of the consortium participants, the schedule of events and other organizational issues have been defined. PetrSU as a member of the consortium of 17 universities of Europe, Asia and South America takes part in implementation of ENDEAVOUR project within the framework of Erasmus Mundus program.
The project task is promotion of European business education outside of the EU with the purpose of increasing appeal of European business courses for students of the third countries receiving education in the EU countries.
Participation of the PetrSU (Faculty of Economics ) in the project so respectable will allow to expand international partnership network of the university and develop new educational projects.

Final seminar of the e-Skills II: e-Skills for Russian Small and Medium Enterprises project financed by the European Union was held in the university. Petrozavodsk State University, Karelian Agency of support of small and medium business and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Karelia have taken part in implementation of the project.
Within the scope of the project training and consulting of businessmen in the field of introduction of modern information communication technologies (ICT) in small and medium business initiated in 2004 with the e-Karelia project was held. Within the framework of e-Karelia 350 businessmen in towns of Petrozavodsk, Sortavala, Kostomuksha, Belomorsk, Segezha were trained in the field of ICT.
Participation in the e-Skills II project allowed businessmen of the republic to improve their e-skills, to expand use of ICT in business processes of thei companies, appreciate efficiency of using ICT and Internet marketing strategy, generate plans for development of automation of their enterprises on the basis of ICT with the purpose of increasing their competitiveness.
The Results of e-Skills II Project and Prospects of e-Business Development in Karelia final seminar was opened by the project coordinator Vice Rector on Informatization of PetrSU Natalia Ruzanova.
The seminar program included review of actions, presentation of pilot projects, results of ICT audits of small enterprises of the RK, discussion of prospects of e-skills development at small and medium enterprises in Karelia, their interaction with authority on the basis of using information communication technologies, plans for e-business development in the republic.

In St.-Petersburg on the basis of St.-Petersburg State University there passed the NORIA meets Russia: Nordic-Russian Collaboration in Research and Researcher Training seminar.
The seminar was held under initiative of NordForsk Research council in cooperation with the Council of Rectors of the Northwest Federal District, Ministry of Education and Science of the RF, Nordic Council of Ministers.
On behalf of PetrSU Rector A.Voronin, Vice-rector for Research N.Dorshakova, Head of Directorate for international cooperation L.Kulikovskaya participated in the seminar.

 

November 7-8, 2007

Delegation of teachers and employees of PetrSU participating in development of the Russian-Finnish Cross-Border University project took part in the Quality Supply of Joint Programs in International Education - from Theory to Practice seminar held on the basis of the Institute of the International Educational programs of St.-Petersburg State Polytechnical University.
On the part of PetrSU the report on the subject of System of PetrSU Quality Management for the Cross-Border University Project was made by the divisional manager for management and quality analysis O.S.Martianova.

The Solveig youth Norwegian club which opens its doors in PetrSU every year held the third international meeting. This time the meeting was devoted to the subject of Peoples of the Barents Region .
What do we know about the native minorities of Saami, Vepsians and Karelians? First, international teams tried to find it out and highlight on paper in drawings, images, words. Shape of traditional baked pies - kalitkas (small Karelian pies made of rye flour unleavened dough, the name comes from Finnish origin kalittoa - smeared) caused a stormy discussion.
Those who came to the meetng enjoyed listening and watching bright and information-intensive presentation about peoples of the Barents Region, what they have in common and what their differences are. The presentation was prepared by Hristina Kravchenko and Anna Varfolomeyeva students of the faculty of philology.
Wedding melodies played on kantele by Ksenia Kalinina (freshman of the faculty of mathematics) and the Solveig club presentation made by the student of the faculty of ecology and biology Anna Rybalova (director of the club), Ksenia Shkiperova (faculty of Baltic and Finnish philology and cilture) and Katya Kougia (faculty of philology) adorned the party.

On November, 3rd in Petrozavodsk there passed the first in the history of Karelia Moral Choice Civil forum.
Its participants - representatives of public organizations from Petrozavodsk and regions of the republic, bodies of state and municipal authority, writers and scientists, teachers and students of Karelian institutions of higher education have made a stand for moral values in the country.
The PetrSU delegation headed by rector of the university, Professor A.Voronin has taken part in work of the forum.

Council of Directorate for International Cooperation of PetrSU.
Members of the Council discussed project of the PetrSU international cooperation strategy, project offers of PetrSU for the new round of Tempus IV program.

Officers of the Directorate for International Cooperation have informed members of the Council on international funds and programs, priority for the PetrSU international project activity; on annual international scholarship programs; on work of the School of project managers.
In conclusion members of the Council exchanged opinions on preparation of reports and plans for the next year, and discussed a number of organizational issues.

 

October 31, 2007

Delegation from NorTech Oulu (University of Oulu, Finland) led by director Risto Hiljanen visited PetrSU.
Purpose of the visit was discussing results of joint project activity, plans for future, and signing the Program for the Period to 2010 as a frame document between PetrSU, two universities of Oulu, Archangelsk State Technical University and Murmansk State Technical University.
This fivepartite agreement provides quite complete coverage of the Russian-Finnish project relations, forms basis for further cooperation of universities till 2010 and serves as a guide for development and introduction of international partner projects.

One-day ecological workshop on the subject of Modern Technologies of Sewage Treatment on Small Objects was organized by the University of Oulu in jointly with the Chair of water-supply, gidraulics and water drain of the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Engineering of PetrSU.
The workshop took place within the scope of BERMAP Cooperation in Spheres of Business, Education and Research between establishments of North Finland and Northwest of Russia project. Its purpose was acquainting its participants with modern technologies of sewage treatment, and introducing main principles of choosing sewage treatment units used on small objects.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World quarterfinal among students of the Northwest of Russia took place in St.-Petersburg in Anichkov Palace.
70 teams have taken part in the contest, three of which represented Petrozavodsk State University. As a result the team of PetrSU undergraduates has won the third place. It comprises Ivan Arhipov, Vyacheslav Medvedev, and Maxim Spirichev. By results of a quarterfinal in the end of November two teams from PetrSU will participate in the world semifinals of the contest where permits to the World Finals to be held in the spring of 2008 in Canada will be raffled.

A group of students from the Art School of Umeå (Sweden) visited Petrozavodsk.
Visit to the capital of Karelia has been organized within the scope of bilaterial educational exchange of students majoring in journalism of Petrozavodsk Children's School of Arts and Umeå Midgardsskolen.
During their five-day stay in Petrozavodsk guests from Sweden have got acquainted with the system of education of journalism majors in PetrSU. At the international meeting in Solveig Youth Club at Petrozavodsk State University Karelian and Swedish students discussed prospects of cooperation in the Barents region.

Irina Kriger, representative of non-government commercial organization Center for Social Innovations (ZSI) visited PetrSU.
Purpose of the visit was monitoring international project implemented by Plasma SEC of PetrSU together with the Civil Research Development Foundation within the scope of the Russian-American Program of basic research and higher education. At the meeting of Irina Kriger with representatives of the Directorate for international cooperation she was acquainted with the international activity in PetrSU and aspects of possible cooperation with ZSI were discussed.

On October 11 representatives of the Directorate for international cooperation of PetrSU A.Berdino and V.Morozov have taken part in the first meeting of the working group on implementation of the Russian-Finnish project Regional Marketing, Strategic Planning and Development of Business Consulting in Joensuu and Petrozavodsk.
The project is implemented by administration of the city of Petrozavodsk and Josek Agency, Finland. The project partners are Karelian Research Centre and Petrozavodsk State University, which supervise issues of science and education. The project primary tasks are creation of City Development Agency, regional marketing of the city, development of cooperation with the city of Joensuu, business consulting and research.

Our university was visited by Mary Kruger, the Consul General of the USA in St.-Petersburg.
Her visit has been dated for the 200 anniversary of the Russian-American diplomatic relations. Ms Kruger and her colleagues have met with the PetrSU President Professor Victor Vasiliev and members of administration. They have discussed prospects of cooperation between Petrozavodsk State University and American institutes of higher education, and then lectured for students of several faculties on the subject of establishing the United States of America.

Petrozavodsk State University hosted a concluding conference of the Development of Internet Based Interactive Government to Business Services in Northwest Russia G2B-NWR project.
The project implementation in Karelia resulted in interactive service on information and advisory support of preparation of documents and applications for registration of the rights of possession and using state property of the Republic of Karelia on the basis of Web-technologies with use of geoinformation systems. The information resource is developed by employees of RCNIT of PetrSU in cooperation with experts of the Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources of the RK and is available at http://service.karelia.ru.

The State Duma of the RF Chairman Boris Gryzlov visited the academic and laboratory complex of the faculty of Physical Engineering of PetrSU.
He was told about constructing team movement of the university, about scientific work of research officers and students, about publishing activities of the university, and introduced to him computer science students - bronze prize-winners of the International Collegiate Programming Contest 2007 in Tokyo.

Meeting of employees of the Department for employment and alumni association, Regional center of employment assistance and adaptation to labour market for graduates of institutes of higher vocational education of the Directorate for social development of PetrSU with the Sociology Professor of I TROMSØ University Gry Paulgaard and the senior research officer of NORUT Institute Un-Doris Carlson-Bek (Tromsø, Norway) was held on September 26.
Norwegian sociologists carry out research on the subject of Youth of the Barents Region. Problems of mployment. It is necessary to note, that in summer of 2007 sociology students of the Faculty of Political and Social Science of PetrSU helped them to questionnaire 23-30 years old young people in Petrozavodsk and Kostomuksha on Behaviour of Youth at the Labour Market under direction of Assistant Professor of the Chair of Sociology of the Faculty of Political and Social Science I.Milyukova.

Public lecture of professor Ludwig Steindorff (Kiel, Germany) in PetrSU.
The lectute was entitled Between Bureaucracy and Ideology: Antireligious Commission at the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) as a Coordinator of Bolshevik Religious Policy in the 1920s.
At the Chair of World History, Professor Steindorff has also held a seminar on the subject of Joseph Volotsky's Letter to Princess Maria Golenina.

Our university was visited by delegation from Xiangtan (the People's Republic of China).
Representatives of the city administration and managements, managers and directors of large companies of Xiangtan met with Vice-rector for organization functions Sergey Korzhov and the head of Directorate for International Cooperation Lyudmila Kulikovskaya to discuss an opportunity of student exchange and creation of language groups in PetrSU and universities of the province of Hunan.

The PetrSU rector Professor Anatoly Voronin met with Director of the center of applied languages and culture of Dresden technical university Gerard Kallen.
During the meeting offers developed during cooperation between Gerard Kallen, Directorate for international cooperation and managers of faculties were discussed. Offers were approved by the rector of PetrSU.
On the basis of these offers it is planned to develop project applications within the scope of Tempus European program and submit them for the competition in the end of this year or in the beginning of the next year.

Summer programming training camp in PetrSU is over; 36 teams from universities of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan have taken part in it.
For ten days teams were in contention for the championship, solved intricate problems, and also communicated and enjoyed recreation.
Winners of this thirteenth camp for the first time in history were students of Petrozavodsk State University, members of WX team Denis Denisov, Alexey and Ilya Nikolaevskiy - to the pleasure of fans, coach Denis Vlasov and head of the PetrSU Club of Programmers Vladimir Kuznetsov.

From August, 22 till August, 25th Petrozavodsk was visited by a delegation of representatives of bodies of municipal authority and communes of the province of More og Romsdal, Norway, as well as organization team of Norwegian Association of regional and local authorities - KS.
The delegation made an informal reconnaissance visit to Petrozavodsk. Norwegian visitors have got acquainted with various sides of life in the Republic of Karelia and city of Petrozavodsk.
Working meeting with personnel of the Directorate for international cooperation and teachers of the Chair of Scandinavian languages was held in PetrSU. Head of Directorate for international cooperation Lyudmila Kulikovskaya and Head of the Chair Anatoly Stikhin made presentations on the university and Chair of Scandinavian languages. During the meeting the Karelian and Norwegian parties managed to cement existing relations, develop contacts new to both parties, and discuss perspective ways of cooperation in the sphere of education.

 

August 12-13, 2007

Delegation of students and teachers of Universities of Helsinki and Joensuu visited PetrSU.
This trip was fact-finding for students of two Finnish universities, representatives of timber enterprises with Northwest of Russia.
Personnel of the Directorate for international cooperation of PetrSU have told Finnish students about our university and its about international activity.
Visiting university library, geology museum of Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science, university forestry complex in the village of Matrosy arouse great interest of the visitors.
For two Finnish students acquaintance to Petrozavodsk was especially important as in September they will come to PetrSU within the exchange program.

Heads of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Karelia, teaching staff of St.-Petersburg Medical academy of post-graduate education formations and Pediatric academy, scientific research institute of children's infections, Moscow scientific research institute of pediatrics, Petrozavodsk State University, regional pediatrists, neurologists take part in work of the conference.
Famous pediatrician, Doctor of Medicine, president of the international Academy of Rehabilitation and Development, Professor Teodor Hellbrügge (Munich, Germany) delivered a lecture on the subject of Rehabilitation of hildren with Neuropathy to the conference participants.

Meeting with managers of ISEC of PetrSU was held at the Directorate for international cooperation.
The meeting participants were presented information on new international projects' competitions. In particular, managers got acquainted with a new round of projects of academic mobility within the framework of Erasmus Mundus (Action 4) program and Norwegian center of international cooperation in the field of higher education at Scientific Council of Norway which announced competition of projects for the Russian Federation for the period from 2007 to 2010. Rules of participation in competitions were explained to participants of the meeting and all necessary documentation was provided.

The NEOU Summer University started working.
On May, 2nd there has arrived group of Finnish students of the Center of vocational training for adults from Joensuu (Finland).

Such educational institution gives people irrespective of age, labour experience and social status an opportunity to receive additional vocational training free of charge. Therefore, the group studying Russian in Petrozavodsk comprises a student, a seller, a teacher of civil engineering, a businessman, a boundary commissioner and a few pensioners.
Everyone in his way motivates choice of Russian as a foreign language: for some people it is important in career, for others - for communicating with Russian friends and colleagues, for someone else it is just interesting to know as Finland and Russia are close neighbours.
In Petrozavodsk students take intensive short-term course of Russian for beginners and use it in practice, living in Russian-speaking environment. Cultural program too is rather intensive, too: sightseeing tour on city, visiting performance at the National Theatre, visiting vocal concert in PetrSU. Of course, Finns have not stood back from the Russia-Finland hockey match, watching which together with Russian fans in Spartak sports bar may be considered extreme spending of time.

International students studying Russian in NEOU of PetrSU completed training multy-level Russian language testing.
Their ability to listen, read, understand, write and speak Russian in various academic and life situations was tested. All the students also had to take a vocabulary and grammar test. The testing was organized as intermediate attestation with the purpose to define the degree of students' language or communicative skills and revealing possible gaps in their knowledge.
The real Russian Federation certificate examination confirming the level of Russian language skills and recognized by ALTE European association, students will take in the beginning of June.

He has especially noted such fields of activity as power safety and climatic change.
This fall in Petrozavodsk the British Council plans to organize Festival of British animation (BA) which has already been a success in Moscow and St.-Petersburg.

Students of Petrozavodsk State University won the 13 place in the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in TokyoStudents of Petrozavodsk State University won the 13 place among 85 teams in the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in Tokyo.
On results of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest the first place went to the team of the University of Warsaw, the Tsinghua University (China) team won the second place. Then there follow the team of St. Petersburg University of IT, Mechanics and Optics that won the third place, and team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) that won the fourth place, teams of Novosibirsk State University (5 place), Saratov State University (6 place) and Moscow State University (10 place).
Team of the Faculty of Mathematics of Petrozavodsk State University is on the 13 line of the fixture list, having left behind many Russian and European universities, as well as largest universities of Asia, Africa, the USA and South America. Our team comprises the gold medalist of the last year's World Contest for high school students in Mexico Denis Denisov, Alexey and Ilya Nikolaevskiy.

'Welcome, Maslenitsa!'"Welcome, Maslenitsa!" was the title of a lesson on Shrove Thursday in NEOU of PetrSU.
Assignments of students studying Russian language lay outside the scope of usual tasks: to cook crepes, perform a fairy tale in Russian, sing a Russian folk song.The lesson itself became a merry tea-drinking with contests, games, mini-performances and songs. Making Maslenitsa dolls using anything at hand students have shown their great imagination and teamwork skills.

Exchange students from universities of Finland and Germany studying in PetrSU have visited exposition of Karelian State Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy 'Flight at the Height of 300 Years'Exchange students from universities of Finland (Oulu, Joensuu, Tampere) and Germany (Munich) studying in PetrSU have visited exposition of Karelian State Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy Flight at the Height of 300 Years devoted to history of the city of Petrozavodsk within the scope of their course of Russian and regional geography.
Students were especially inspired with the fact, that they have been visiting the oldest stone building of the city. During the excursion led in Russian, students have seen relics of city history: archeological finds from excavation of Petrozavodsk sloboda settlement, military and civil production of Alexandrovsky factory, photos and personal belongings of the townspeople of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries, observed the Nobiliary assembly hall where important visitors were received, first of all emperor Alexander II, have taken a walk in Governor's garden where product samples of Alexandrovsky factory are exposed. By the monument to the first governor of Petrozavodsk and remarkable poet Gavrila Derzhavin the teacher of Russian Marina Khazova read his poems to students.

A group of teachers and employees of Petrozavodsk State University has taken part in the second of a series of seminars devoted to problems of strategic management of institutes of higher education and quality management.
The seminar organized by experts of the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS, University of Twente, the Netherlands) was held on February 7th through 10th in Saint-Petersburg.
Groups from Pomor State University named after Mikhail Lomonosov (Archangelsk), Uhta State Technical University and the Novgorod State University named after Prince Yaroslav the Wise have also taken part in its work. Participants have got acquainted with examples of strategic planning in a number of universities of the Netherlands and the Great Britain, the strategic plan of Novgorod State University, main principles of distribution of means in institutes of higher education.

Closing of winter programming training camp in PetrSUCup of the Head of the Republic of Karelia competition was summed up at closing of winter programming training camp in PetrSU.
The first place want to the team of the St.Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics. Sergey Katanandov personnaly presented the prizes to the winners. Coach Andrey Stankevich received the treasured Cup from the Head of the RK. Students of the University of Warsaw were on the second position in the tournament table, it was a team which took part in the winter programming training camp for the first time this year. The third place went to students from the St.-Petersburg State University.
This contests that was founded at Sergey Katanandov's direct participation has already become a tradition. Thanks to it, for the fourth time students have got a chance to try their skills and bring home souvenirs from Karelia.
In common offset of winter programming training camp the first place went to guests from Poland, Warsaw U Warsaw HAMMERHEADS team. The second was taken by the SPb IFMO 1 team (St.Petersburg State University of ITMO). The third place went to Moscow SU SE team (Moscow State University).

Petrozavodsk State University receives student programmers' international academic-training camp.
More than 100 best programmers of leading universities of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Poland, finalists of the World Computing Machinery Programming Contest take part in it.
Since last year PetrSU was officially appropriated the status of academic-training center for all students of Russia participating in Computing Machinery Programming Contests.
This time representatives of 17 universities of Russia and the CIS countries have gathered in Petrozavodsk from 15 cities, 34 student teams, 15 of them are the World championship participants. There are representatives of St.-Petersburg, Saratov, Novosibirsk, the Eagle, Stavropol, Vologda, Izhevsk, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus and, for the first time, Poland.
Within the framework of the training camp the Cup of the Head of the Republic Karelia will be held for the fourth consecutive time.

Delegation of Karelia has taken part in the international seminar for youth leaders training.
International seminar for youth leaders training was held on January, 25-28th in Kitee (Finland) within the framework of the agreement on joint activity between the State Committee of the Republic of Karelia on Sports and Youth and youth department of provincial government of East Finland. Delegations of Karelia, Estonia, Finland have taken part in the seminar. Delegation of Karelia included students of Petrozavodsk pedagogical college and Petrozavodsk State University, representatives of PetrSU student trade union committee, participants of the Award youth program.
The seminar program included presentation of activity of youth organizations, exchange of experience, discussion of aspects of participation of youth in public life. Participants of the seminar have visited Youth Centers in Kitee where they have got acquainted with leisure organization system of youth in Finland.
The delegation of Karelia has invited representatives of youth parliaments of Estonia and Finland to take part in the international conference concerning development of youth parliamentarism to be held in May, 2007 in Petrozavodsk.

Wooden architecture of KareliaThe PetrSU delegation went to Florence to present its ideas and plans at the international conference, the devoted to wooden architecture of Karelia.
Within the next week teachers and students from universities of Florence (Italy), Oulu (Finland), Odessa Academy of Architecture (Ukraine) and PetrSU (Russia) will discuss problems of preservation of cultural heritage of the Russian North and way of their solving. Within the scope of the Wooden architecture of Karelia conference there will be held seminars and excursion trips which will allow to get acquainted with experience of Italy in preservation and use of its historical and architectural heritage. Participants of the conference will discuss opportunities of influx of foreign investments for restoration and preservations of monuments in Karelia. Interest of Italians to wooden architecture of the republic is not casual. The universities plan to sign the cooperation agreement in the field of studying wooden architecture of Karelia and carrying out of restoration works.

Today RCNIT it is famous all over the republic and far beyond its borders. Karelia became electronic and computer advanced republic, first of all, due to the Center and people that have been working there within these years.

Rectors of institutes of higher education have discussed modern condition of higher education in neighbouring countries, prospects of development of cooperation and possible directions of joint academic and scientific activity.

Session of the Council of Consortium of Rectors of the Finnish-Russian Transboundary University (FRTU) was held in the University of Lappeenranta. The PetrSU Rector Professor A.Voronin participated in its work.
The basic purpose of FRTU project is development of strong and long-term partner relations between higher educational institutions of Finland and Russia within the scope of implementation of joint Master's academic programs.
In the Consortium there are presented universities of the cities of Joensuu, Helsinki, Tampere, Lappeenranta and Kuopio. From the Russian party the consortium includes institutes of higher education of Northwest Russia: St.-Petersburg State University, Petrozavodsk State University, SPb Polytechnical University and European University in Saint Petersburg. At the Council aspects of training students within joint with FRTU Master's programs were discussed. Activity of universities of Finland and Russia within the framework of consortium received positive estimation. As a result of the meeting rectors have signed the Memorandum of Continuation of Cooperation up to the end of 2011.

The PetrSU Rector Professor Anatoly Voronin visited the University of Joensuu and met with its Rector Professor Perttu Vartiainen.
Heads of higher educational institutions were satisfied with development of cooperation between the universities which started in 1975, and discussed prospects of teamwork in various spheres. In particular, research in timber sphere and development of information technologies. They have visited Campus where 8 faculties of the university are located, and visited the "InFotonics" Center engaged in project aimed at expansion and intensification of knowledge and technologies exchange within the framework of the Neighbourliness Program of EU Euroregion Karelia.
Then the delegation visited "Oasis", the original center of assistance to business which provides various premises equipped with computers and communication means for work of various companies, entrepreneurs and other structures. In the evening in Carelia Hall there was a Christmas concert of the University of Joensuu chorus and North-Carelia Polytechnics orchestra.

The PetrSU Rector has visited Finland. Purpose of the visit was strengthening and development of cooperation between the universities of the two countries.
In Finland there has passed a series of meetings of the PetrSU Rector Professor Anatoly Voronin with rectors of frontier universities. In the trip there also participated: head of department of international cooperation Lyudmila Kulikovskaya, the PetrSU IT-park deputy director Anton Shabaev and Professor of the Chair of Applied Mathematics Vladimir Kuznetsov.

Project of cooperation between University of Vermont and PetrSUThe first working meeting in PetrSU Rector's office was held where project of cooperation between University of Vermont (UVM, state of Vermont, the USA) and Petrozavodsk State University was discussed.
The PetrSU Rector Professor Anatoly Voronin, the PetrSU President Professor Victor Vasiliev, and Professor of University of Vermont, the project co-director Patricia Stokovsky have taken part in it.
Petrozavodsk State University was also represented by Head of the international cooperation department Andrey Habonen and senior teacher of the Faculty of Law Svetlana Agarkova.
The cooperation proposal has been made by the American party for implementation of the Karelian-Vermont Steady Development of Teachers and Post-Graduate Students, and Scientific Experience Exchange project. Its main purpose is to promote steady development in ecological, economic and social areas of the two territories which for a long time have been supporting sister towns' relations and which natural and climatic conditions are very similar. The project is based on previous information exchange between the State of Vermont and the Republic of Karelia in the sphere of administration management, legal and medical spheres.
The project will be realized within three years through a series of visits of teachers and post-graduate students of two universities, symposiums and mutual consultations in the State of Vermont and in Karelia. Each trip with the purpose of experience exchange, improvement of skills and reception of information in the field of scientific interests is planned to last for 3-4 weeks. This preparatory meeting was the first of 7 trips planned, and the project will be over of takes place in 2009. Its financing is carried out by the American party. Professor Patricia Stokovsky intends to meet with deans of various faculties of PetrSU, deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the RK, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture of the republic.
The conversation was held in English without interpreting. Patricia Stokovsky, Anatoly Voronin and Victor Vasiliev perfectly understood each other and have noted importance of the joint project developing new productive communications between the universities and our countries.

Petrozavodsk State University has taken part in the Internationalization of Higher Education - from Theory to Practice videoconference.
It was held within the scope of continuation of the project of National fund of professional training together with Federal Education Agency Monitoring of Participation of Russian Institutes of Higher Education in Bologna Process and within the framework of the Federal target program of education development (2006-2010).
10 institutes of higher education of European part of the Russian Federation, as well as Lappeenranta Technological University (Finland) have taken part in the conference. Therefore, from time to time during the conversation Russian language was giving place to English.
On behalf of PetrSU head of the international cooperation department Lyudmila Kulikovskaya, and chief of the department of exchange and educational programs Galina Parihina participated in the videoconference.

Presentation of Russian translation of J.Kulomaa's book Finnish Occupation of Petrozavodsk in 1941-1944 took place in the reading-hall of the PetrSU scientific library.
The book appeared thanks to teamwork of people not indifferent to history of their hometown. The whole team of translators worked on the book, including students of the university. However, the main liability for its quality was incured by editor the PetrSU Professor Doctor of History Yu.M.Kilin.

Teams of leading institutes of higher education of the Northwest Federal district of the Russian Federation took part in it.
Wx team of PetrSU (Denis Denisov, Ilya Nikolayevsky, Alexy Nikolayevsky) shared the first and the second places with students from SPb ITMO.

6 faculties of PetrSU continue working on the project Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University (CBU).
During the project joint curricula on history, information technologies, international relations, forestry and bio-energetics are developed; marketing of offered magistracy academic programs is accomplished; international contracts and conditions for implementation of these programs are developed. Project head from the Finnish party A.Luukkanen comes to PetrSU on November, 7th, 2006. Meetings with representatives of all of 6 directions of magistracy programs are planned. During meetings problems and prospects of the project implementation will be discussed.

In PetrSU there passed a working meeting within the scope of the TACIS project Development of Interactive Services of e-Government to Business of the Northwest of Russia (G2B).
The project was launched in November, 2005, it is implemented at the support of the European Union on behalf of Delegation of the European Commission in Russia and coordinated with the general strategy of the e-Russia Federal target program. The project was presented by the deputy head of the project A.Badenko and the project coordinator in the RK N.Ruzanova. They have noted that its purpose is stimulation of economic growth and competitiveness of Russian economy, expansion of opportunities of its integration into the all-European economy through expansion of use of information and communication technologies for perfection of services renderd by bodies of the government to small and medium enterprises.
During the meeting a training seminar has been held for representatives of state structures, organizations supporting business, and representatives of small and medium business of Karelia. The Deputy Minister of Industry and Natural Resources of the RK V.Markov, head of the Department on information and protection of information of the Ministry of Economic Development of the republic V.Solovov, heads of small and medium enterprises of Karelia have taken part in the seminar.
A package of aspects concerning planning and project management in the sphere of creating interactive services of e-government to business has been considered at the seminar.
The project coordinator in Karelia D.Trutnev has in detail dwelled on tasks of planning and creating interactive services of the government to business and complex approach to management of projects.
The project Development of Interactive Services of e-Government to Business of the Northwest of Russia (G2B) will last for 2 years during which in four pilot regions in cooperation with regional administrations there will be realized at least 4 interactive services on the basis of European experience in view of regional specificity.

Delegation of PetrSU led by the Rector Professor A.Voronin arrived to the University of Kuopio (Finland) for an official visit.
During the visit meetings with the Rector Professor Matti Usitupa, Vice-Rector Sipra Saitonen, teachers and employees of the university have been organized.
The delegation visited faculties, laboratories, and centers; got acquainted with the basic directions of scientific and academic activity of the University of Kuopio; discussed opportunities of further cooperation. System of construction of quality at the university, work of medical clinics and laboratories, Technological center of Teknia caused special interest among the delegation members.

In PetrSU session of the Council on International Cooperation of the university took place. Representatives of the epartment of international projects and programs, administration of the North-European Open University, deans of faculties have taken part in it.
President of PetrSU Professor Victor Vasiliev opened the meeting. He has noted that the university has broad experience of international cooperation. At the faculties it developed quite successfully in many respects owing to existence of North-European Open University of PetrSU. Today it operates jointly with many Russian and foreign partners. Overall objective of North-European Open University of PetrSU is personnel and scientific maintenance of social and economic development of the European North of Russia, formation of uniform educational, scientific and information space in the North of Europe. Now there are 14 international centres of science and education at various faculties. As a rule, they aim their work at the basic sphere of preparation of experts.
International cooperation for the university is a very important source of new knowledge, technologies and investments into education. As in the long term the republic will pass to innovative development in the basic branches of economy and social sphere, experience of Petrozavodsk State University gained in recent years will come in handy. Results of international cooperation of the university are especially notable in the field of introduction of new information technologies and innovative activity: the e-Karelia project, creation of Center of PetrSU - Metso Automation Systems and IT-park. The University also palns to increase the number of trained foreign students, creation of a Karelian-Finnish Technological Village on the basis of the university campus that is under construction now and implementation of many other international projects.

The Second Russian-Finnish Forum is over. At the final press conference he Federation Council Vice-Chairman Mikhail Nikolayev, the Governor of the Finnish province of Oulu Eino Siuruainen, and the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov addressed the journalists.
Giving positive appraisal to results of the forum as a whole, Sergey Katanandov in his statement has especially emphasized value of work performed by Petrozavodsk State University for development of international cooperation in the field of innovations. Successful joint activity of PetrSU and Finnish company Metso Automation, Inc., in the sphere of software development for pulp-and-paper enterprises and training of experts of this branch is one of successful variants of such mutually advantageous cooperation. Creation of Metso Automation Center in PetrSU, and then and university T-park, in the opinion of the Head of the RK, convincingly proves in practice, that Petrozavodsk State University becomes an innovation kernel of development of the republic. It is a good example of the perspective approach to development and introduction of new technologies. Mutual benefit such work for the university, business and the region is obvious.

Cooperation in the Field of Tourism is the name of one of debate tribunes within the framework of the Second Russian-Finnish Economic Forum which has opened within the precinct of Petrozavodsk State University.
The basic topics of discussion are innovations of tourist business, industrial tourism, tourism as a mechanism of cultural heritage preservation. Discussion was opened by the Lomonosov Moscow State University Vice-Rector, National Academy of Tourism Vice-President Viktor Kruzhalin, the Adviser of Governor of the province of Oulu (Finland) Tapio Saavalainen and the Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the RK Dmitry Kislov.
"Kareliya has the most extensive border with the European Union - more than 700 kilometers. For the last 8 years here it has been implemented over 90 projects connected with development of tourism. Experience of the republic is approved by the federal agency on tourism, studied in other regions of the country," - head of department of tourism of the Ministry of Economic Development of the RK Vladimir Chekhonin has informed in his report.
Among the meeting participants there are university scientists, experts in the field of tourism, culture, tourist business of Finland and representatives of various regions of Russia. In their statements they emphasized importance of development of tourism between the two countries. It is the major complex sphere of joint development, and also perspective area of introduction of innovative projects, expansion of cooperation in the field of culture, science, and education.
Scientific and personnel maintenance of the industry of tourism is essentially important problem which is especially actual today for institutes of higher education of Finland and Russia.

Just like Russia for Finland, at the moment, Finland for Russia is one of the most important strategic partners in the sphere of metallurgical, wood-working and power engineering industries. The Second Russian-Finnish Economic Forum is another step towards closer cooperation between the countries. From this meeting its participants - representatives of Russian and foreign business circles, members of parliaments, heads of federal and regional enforcement authorities, experts, scientists, public figures - first of all expect exchange of opinions and determination of further ways of cooperation, including cooperation between universities.

The forum has begun with opening of an exhibition in the National Theatre' foyer. The exhibition is devoted to innovative technologies in various areas of economy. Exposition of PetrSU is formed of presentation materials of scientific and technical potential of the institute of higher education. Participants of the Forum had an opportunity to get acquainted with the activity of IT-park existing on the basis of the university, with the basic aspects of implementation of special projects for industrial enterprises of Russia and the Finnish company of Metso Automation Inc. In the auditorium of the National Theatre the forum participants were welcomed by the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Chairman S.Mironov, the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia Chairman N.Levin, Governor of the province of Oulu (the Finnish Republic) Eino Siuruainen, the Consul General of the Finnish Republic in St.-Petersburg Juhani Väänänen.

In Petrozavodsk there has begun its work the VIIth International Scientific and Technical Conference New Information Technologies in Pulp and Paper Industry and Power Engineering.
It was opened by the Rector of Petrozavodsk State University Professor A.Voronin and the Metso Automation JSC President and Honourable Doctor of PetrSU T.Laaksone.
About 100 participants including representatives of the largest enterprises of pulp and paper industry of the Center of Russia, the Urals, Siberia, companies developing information technologies from the Russian Federation, Belarus and Finland, and also Petrozavodsk State University and Technical University of Tampere (Finland) will take part in the conference organized by Petrozavodsk State University and Metso Automation, which is one of the leading companies in the field of automation of industrial processes of pulp-and-paper branch.
The first conference was held in 1994. Then it caused great interest among the largest enterprises and specialized branch organizations of the country. It also became an appreciable step in development of cooperation between Metso Automation and the Chair of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics of Petrozavodsk State University. With every new conference Petrozavodsk was concidered almost a unique place in the country where experts of the branch could exchange new experience in the field of information technologies. Today in the conference participate pulp and paper mills that produce up to 70% of the Russian paper and cellulose.
During the meeting it is planned to discuss results of development of program systems for efficient control over technological processes, industrial complexes and enterprises, and also strengthening of cooperation of experts of Russia. Exchange of experience in the field of development and introduction of new information technologies in pulp and paper industry and power engineering of large enterprises, problem of working out some uniform strategy for development of automation of the branch - these issues are included in the conference program which will work till September, 29th.

Delegation of trade unions of the province of North Carelia arrived to Petrozavodsk for a three-day visit.
It includes eleven representatives of three leading trade unions of Finland: the central organization of trade unions CAK, trade union of employees and trade union AKAVA. They are workers of education, timber and wood-working industries, agriculture, power engineering, hotel and restaurant business, municipal and government servants. Leader of the regional branch of CAK in North Careliya Pertti Olavi Hyvenen heads the delegation.
Within the scope of the visit members of the Finnish delegation met with representatives of PetrSU administration led by the Rector Professor Antoly Voronin and heads of the trade-union organization of the university.

Youth Norwegian club Solveig has held a meeting of PetrSU students with visitors from the Higher National School of Svanvik that is located in the north of Norway.
Within a year students from Norway, Poland, Switzerland, and the USA will study in Finland at the international branch of the Higher National School. They came to Russia to improve their language skills and to compare education in Russia with education in other countries. This aspect became the main topic for discussion at the last meeting.
The most part of Solveig club is comprised of students of PetrSU. All of them study at different faculties of the university. For example, the head of the club Anna Rybalova is a junior student of the Faculty of Ecology and Biology. All the club members are united by common desire to learn more about Norway.
On September, 22nd visitors from the Higher National School went on an excursion about Petrozavodsk State University, got acquainted to work of the Chair of Scandinavian Languages and activity of the students' trade union organization.

In Petrozavodsk State University there opened an international scientific conference devoted to the problem of identity, mentality in its interaction with political, economic, social, religious and cultural processes in the Barents-region countries.
"Regional northern identity: from the past to the future" is the third and the final conference within the scope of the NordForks international project "Processes of Barents-region modernization". This project is implemented by the PetrSU Centre of science and educational in the sphere of history and culture of European North together with Luleå Technological University (Sweden).
Greeting the conference participants, Natalia Dorshakova, the PetrSU Vice-rector for Research, has noted a special place of the conferences devoted historical issues. As she said, for a modern historian it is very important to have an impartial view opinion.
Alexander Pashkov, Head of the Chair of history of pre-revolutionary Russia of the Faculty of History of PetrSU continued this subject in his report entitled "Images of Russian North in the XXth century" and devoted changes in the image of Karelia within the past hundred year period and the way our land, having passed through revolution, collectivization, industrialization, Great Patriotic War, in end the XXth century has faced the necessity to revive its lost traditions and new problems which become the reason of the tragedy, similar to the one that have occurred in Kondopoga.
Within three days researchers, teachers and post-graduate students from institutes of higher education from Sweden, Norway, Finland, the USA, Germany and Russia will take part in work of the conference. Except for the theme declared in the title, aspects of further cooperation and creation of new joint projects will be discussed there.

The First international conference Russia and Greece: dialogues of cultures is over.
All these days from September, 4 till September, 8th at the university there was open the exhibition of scientific works of employees of the Chair of classical philology of the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU. The chair became one of the main organizers of the international conference which took place at thorough support of the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Fund. Experts from different cities of Russia, including Moscow and St.-Petersburg, and also from Belarus, Ukraine, Greece, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina addressed the conference.

A meeting within the scope of BEGIN educational project in the field of GIS took place in Petrozavodsk State University.
At the meeting representatives from Sweden and PetrSU discussed aspects of applying GIS technologies in education and scientific research in the Republic of Karelia as this area belongs to the Barentss region.
The PetrSU rector Anatoly Voronin has emphasized importance of the project for regional development and has accepted the offer on participation of PetrSU in the current project and continuation of the project in 2007.September 7, 2006
International scientific and practical conference Woman in Old Belief opened in PetrSU.
The conference devoted to the 300th anniversary of foundation of Leksinskaya old belief monastery is organized by the Chair of history of pre-revolutionary Russia of Petrozavodsk State University.
Participants of the scientific event plan to discuss aspects of Old Belief history and culture, and also to study the role of women in Old Belief community of Karelia and Russia.

The First international conference Russia and Greece: dialogues of cultures organized by the Chair of classical philology of the Faculty of Philology of the university.

Its participants are experts from Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Pskov, Tyumen, Nizhni Novgorod, Samara, Saratov, Perm, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina; during the conference they plan to organize collective work to study cultural, literary and language aspects of the "Russia and Greece" subject. This subject has been declared and considered from the historical point of view at the international conference "Russia and the Mediterranea" on May 19 -22, 2005 at the University of Athens.
The Consul General of Greece in St.-Petersburg Mr. Dimitrios Letsios and rector of PetrSU Professor A.Voronin welcomed the conferencehave participants.

International summer training camp of institutes of higher education teams participating in the World programming championship have come to the end in PetrSU.
At the training camp closing ceremony in which rector of PetrSU Professor A.Voronin has taken part, there have been announced and awarded winners of the competition.
On results of nine rounds of the training camp the 1st place was won by the IFMO 1 team from SPb (Akshiyev, Dvorkin, Satiukov - SPb ITMO SU), the 2nd place went to the Petr+MSU SE Ru Net team (Popelyshev, Khalyavin - Moscow State University, Spirichev - PetrSU), the 3rd place went to SPb SU Burunduchki (Kopeliovich - St.Petersburg State University, Davidov, Petrov - schoolboys of SPb).

Petrozavodsk State University welcomes Annual International Workshop on Advances in Methods of Information and Communication Technology, AMICT '06.
Its participants are University of Helsinki, Technological University of Helsinki, universities of Kuopio, Joensuu, Oulu, and Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Science and PetrSU.
The seminar grows out of cooperation of the Chair of Computer Science with universities of Finland, first of all, with the Chair of Computer Science of the University of Helsinki which started in 1993.

International team programming school opened in PetrSU. At the official school opening ceremony the university president Professor V.Vasilev welcomed its participants.
Participants of the next training camp are students from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. In total about 30 teams will try their abilities and will prepare for participation in the annual world championship in America.
Summer training camp of the PetrSU programmers is not only daily training competitions, analyses of tasks' solutions, lectures, work with trainers, and an opportunity to take a rest: to visit Kizhi island, the main sight of the republic, to go in for sports in the university gymnasium, to get acquainted and communicate to adherents, to visit the aquapark.
This year the training camp program also included a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Information Technologies and Communications of the Russian Federation Dmitry Milovantsev. Attention to the event so important from local and federal authorities is not surprising: from year to year Karelia gains more and more reasons to obtain features of northern Russian 'Silicon Valley'.

The grammar school N37 graduate from the city of Petrozavodsk Denis Denisov was included into a number of winners of the International Computer Science Olympiad held in the Mexican city of Merida.
Coaches Professor of PetrSU Doctor of Engineering V.Kuznetsov and the post-graduate student of the Chair of applied mathematics and cybernetics D.Vlasov have helped Denis to achieve results so high.
This summer Denis Denisov became the student of Petrozavodsk State University and joined his Wx4 team-mates sophomore students the Nikolayev brothers. By the way, this team achieved successes not only at school, but also at student competitions. So we shall hope, that this year the team of PetrSU will not only participate in the final competition of the World Programming Championship, but will also win medals, having confirmed the status of Petrozavodsk as one of the largest centers of preparation of student programming teams.

International summer school "Modern Network Communications" of Transboundary Russian-Finnish University, information and communication technologies, opened in Petrozavodsk State University.
Students of universities of Helsinki, Kuopio, Lappeenranta technological university, St.-Petersburg Polytechnical State University, St.Petersburg State University and PetrSU take part in work of the school.
Besides subject matters, students will participate in work of the Annual International Workshop on Advances in Methods of Information and Communication Technology. Within the scope of this seminar there will pass a round-table discussion of the current status and problems of ICT sphere.
Faculty of Mathematics is the key organizer of work of the Summer school on the part Petrozavodsk State University.

The 44th session of the Joint Russian-Finnish commission on use of boundary water systems is held in Petrozavodsk.
This year the Russian delegation includes representatives of Boundary service of FSS of Russia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Republic of Karelia, Neva-Ladoga and Dvina-Pechora basin departments of the Russian Committee for water resources, "Baltvodkhoz" Federal State Department, "Territorial Generating Company N1" Open Society, Northern scientific research institute of fish farnming of Petrozavodsk State University.
Participants of the 44th session of the Commission will discuss results of actions on protection of boundary water systems in the past year, course of performance of the Intergovernmental agreement of 1972 On power use of the site of the river Vuoksa limited by Svetogorskaya and Imatra of hydroelectric power stations, performance of regulations of the Saimaa lake and Vuoksa river, will consider information on control over performance of water-security actions on Seleznevka river, opportunity of joint implementation of pilot projects within the scope of the Frame water instruction of EU, as well as other issues.

During the visit head of the regional union of North Carelia Penti Hyttinen, head of the regional association of municipalities of Kainuu district Hannu Leskinen, secretary general of the regional program of the European Union Good Neighbourliness: Euroregion Karelia and chairman of the regional union of Oulu Marko Ruokangas was discussed aspects of frontier cooperation with the Head of the Republic of Karelia S.Katanandov and met with the State Committee of the RK for Development of Local Self-Government hairman A.Moiseyev and representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development of the republic.

In PetrSU there opened the international conference under the aegis of IFIP "Development of computer facilities in Russia and countries of the former USSR: history and prospects (SORUCOM)".
This forum is the first international event organized with the purpose of complex overviewing of computer facilities in the USSR and Russia at all stages of its development. The conference opening ceremony was held in the assembly hall of Petrozavodsk State University. At the plenary session the main participants and organizers of the conference delivered their reports. On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Karelia the Legislative Assembly Chairman N.Levin welcomed the conference participants. He has noted that it is a great honor for the republic to receive such guests, as to the conference there came pioneers, people who started the country and global computerization, and created first computers.

Rector of PetrSU Professor Anatoly Voronin met with the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in St.-Petersburg Jaroslav Drozd and Vice-Consul Voichek Jablonski.
The conversation passed in a warm friendly atmosphere. At the meeting plans of cooperation in the academic sphere, mobility of teaching, opportunities of studying Polish language and establishment of sister-city relations between Petrozavodsk and one of the cities of Poland were discussed.

The system of education informatization on the basis of Centers of New Informational Technologies celebrates its 15th anniversary.
In 1991 by order of the State committee for higher education of the Russian Federation the Regional Center of New Information Technologies (RC NIT) has been created on the basis of the data-processing centre as a territorial part of the infrastructure of informatization of education in Russia. The primary goal of the Center is the organization and work on introduction of information technologies in educational institutions of the Northern region of the Russian Federation.

Professor Victor Vasiliev spoke of results of his work in the capacity of the Rector of PetrSU. Besides, the First Vice-Rector of the university Anatoly Voronin as a nominee for the post of the Rector of PetrSU submitted his election program and answered questions of the Conference delegates.

The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation has approved the rating of higher educational institutions by results of their activity.
On results of 2005 among 86 Russian universities PetrSU has been included into the group from 31 to 35 places.
For definition of rating of higher educational institutions and specialities data was collected since January to March, 2005. Many parameters were considered: quality of the teaching staff; quantity of students of different forms of training; presence of students from other countries; volume of scientific research accomplished; publishing activities; maintenance of students with hostels, dispensaries, etc.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Governmentof the RK the Minister of Finance Alexander Kolesov and the Rector of PetrSU Professor Victor Vasiliev have opened the inter-regional exhibition "Innovations - for the European North" in the Palace of creativity of children and youth and have taken part in a plenary session of the inter-regional conference "European North: Problems of Transition to the Innovative Way of Development".
Speaking at the opening of the Days of Innovatics the head of Petrozavodsk higher educational institution has noted that Karelia as a subject of the Russian Federation located on the border with EU should by definition serve an example of innovative activity and a testing area for transfer of technologies both from the West to the East, and from the East to the West. According to Victor Vasiliev, purpose of the exhibition is to unite business, education, science and authorities about the idea of constructing the knowledge based economics.

The Internet-conference is organized by the Federal Labour and employment service, Federal Agency for Education, Department of federal public service of employment of the population in the Republic of Karelia, and Petrozavodsk State University.
During the action it is planned to consider problems of perfection of labour market and the market of educational services in regions of Russia.

A series of lectures for the interfaculty group of students of the university under the supervision of the Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov and the university rector Professor Victor Vasiliev opened in PetrSU.
The first in this academic year class has been completely devoted to answers of the Head of the Republic to questions of students of the group.

Features of formation of the republican budget and wages of different layers of the population, prospects of modernization in the basic branches of economy of the republic and implementation of large investment projects have been considered.

The conference is held by the Institute of language, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Centre, jointly with the faculty of Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture of Petrozavodsk State University.

In PetrSU there opened the International scientific conference Structural and Functional Features of Biosystems of the North (Individuals, Population, Community) devoted to the 65th anniversary of PetrSU and the faculty of Ecology and Biology.
Its participants plan to discuss problems of theoretical biology, ecology, population biology, ecological physiology, quantitative biology, biological variety, spatial structure of ecological systems and ecological mechanisms of stability of biosystems of different ranks under conditions of the North. During plenary sessions leading scientific Russia and the countries of Fennoskandia will present their reports.

Ceremonial meeting of the Learned Council of PetrSU, Academic councils of faculties devoted to the 65th anniversary of PetrSU took place in the Russian Drama Theatre of Petrozavodsk.
Representatives of the Government of Karelia and capital of the republic, guests from Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Russian regions, from Finland and the USA came to congratulate professors, teachers and employees of Petrozavodsk State University on the anniversary.
One of the key moments of the session was ceremony of consecration into Honourable Doctors of PetrSU.

During the meeting prospects of further cooperation and expansion of a student and postgraduate exchange between the Chair and Renvall Institute of the University of Helsinki were discussed.

Traditional ceremony of consecration into students took place in PetrSU.
The solemn ceremony of consecration into freshman students became the first in a row of celebratory events devoted to the 65th anniversary of PetrSU held this week. Heads of the university, deans of faculties, representatives of the republican authority - the Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, the Legislative Assembly of the RK Chairman Nikolai Levin, the Minister of Education and Youth Galina Razbivnaya came to congratulate newly made students. Addressing to the students, the Rector of PetrSU, Professor Victor Vasiliev assured that the university provides all opportunities and does its best to make today's freshmen highly skilled experts in a few years.

Employees of the Chair of History of the Countries of Northern Europe of PetrSU Ilya Solomesch (paper "Russian pre-revolutionary historiography of the war of 1808-1809"), Irina Takala (paper "Soviet and postSoviet historiography of the war of 1808-1809"), as well as the professor of Russian research of the University of Helsinki, Honourable Doctor of PetrSU Timo Vihavainen (paper "The war of 1808-1809 in perception of the Finnish public") have taken part in the seminar.

The Chair of History of the Countries of Northern Europe of PetrSU holds the International seminar of historians "East Finland and Russian Karelia: Tradition and Law in Life of Karelians" devoted to the 65th anniversary of the university.
The seminar is a next meeting scheduled within the framework of scientific contacts between the Karelian and Finnish scientific historians and continues the tradition founded in the beginning of the 1990s.

The 43-rd session of the joint Russian-Finnish commission on use of boundary water systems is held in the Finnish city of Lappenranta.
Participants of the session will consider many tasks, among which there are regulation of use of water resources of Sajmaa lake and Vuoksa river, course of performance of intergovernmental agreement of 1972 "On energy use of the site of Vuoksa river, limited by Svetogorskaya and Imatra Hydroelectric Power Stations", etc.
This year the Russian delegation included representatives of Northern Scientific Research Institute of Fish Industry of PetrSU.

The plenary meeting of the traditional city August pedagogical conference passed in the assembly hall of PetrSU.
The basic issue of the conference this year was "Achieving New Quality of Eucation as a Priority of the Society and the State".
The Minister of Education and Youth Galina Razbivnaya, mayor of Petrozavodsk Victor Maslyakov, the assistant to the Head of self-government of the capital of Karelia Tatyana Anokhova, Rector of PetrSU Professor Victor Vasiliev have taken part in the meeting.
Within the framework of the conferences the TV-bridge between teachers of Petrozavodsk, their colleagues from Vologda and one of the Finnish cities took place in order to find optimum solution of general problems.
For the first time representatives of the parental public became participants of city annual pedagogical conference.

Days of culture of the Republic of Poland pass in Karelia from August, 30 till September, 20.
The action is held within the framework of the big project of Adam Mickiewicz Polish Institute. The project purpose is mutual exchange and demonstration of cultural achievements of Poland and Russia (2004-2005).

Within the framework of the Days of Culture of the Republic of Poland the round table discussion "Russian-Polish Phobias and Myths" organized by the chair of General History of PetrSU takes place.

Rector of PetrSU Professor Victor Vasiliev will receive the premium of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of education in 2005 for his work "Development and Implementation of the Concept of International Cooperation for Institutes of Higher Education of Russia".
The corresponding decision was signed by the Prime Minister of the government Mikhail Fradkov, after consideration of offers of the Interdepartmental council on awarding premiums of the Government of Russia in the field of education.
There are 15 educational projects developers to be awarded with the governmental premiums.

The trade representative of the Russian Federation in Finland Valery Shliamin has met with the first Vice-Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin and the Director General of Metso Automation Projects Oy Teuvo Laaksonen.
At the meeting results and prospects of cooperation of the university and the Finnish company in the sphere of information technologies were discussed. Valery Shliamin has suggested to consider the opportunity of creating a special technical and promotional economic zone on the basis of PetrSU with use of available achievements and at participation of new partners from Finland.
Also the parties have agreed about joint participation of PetrSU and Metso Automation in the Russian-Finnish Innovative forum forthcoming in April, 2006.

PetrSU and the University of Warwick (Great Britain) have signed the agreement on cooperation.
The representative of the British university Professor Stephen Hagen who is a director of the largest Mersia Business Institute in Great Britain has visited PetrSU within the framework of the Bridge project financed by the British Council, and aimed at development of joint courses and programs of the two countries. PetrSU became the first university in Russia with which the University of Warwick has signed the agreement on cooperation, which testifies to great prospects which the British university sees in cooperation with our university.

Representatives of PetrSU have taken part in the international seminar "Destiny of People in Works of Writers of Kalevala District and the Finnish District of Kajnu" past in the village of Haikolä of Kalevala district of Karelia.
The seminar has been organized by local administration at the support of the State Committee for National Politics and the Karelian union of writers within the framework of annual literary festival "Rodichi (Kinsfolk)".
The dean of faculty of Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture Tatyana Starshova and the PetrSU graduate of this year Maja Kuzmina have presented their papers devoted to works of Karelian classic writers to participants of the seminar.

Within the framework of the All-Russian scientific and practical conference IT-Innovations in Education session of a round table Electronic Libraries and Collections: IT-Innovations in Regional Information Policy was held in PetrSU.
The conference is organized by the Russian association of electronic libraries (Noncommercial partnership "Electronic libraries" - NP ELBI), Partnership for information society development in the Northwest of Russia (Noncommercial partnership "Northwest PRIOR"), Petrozavodsk State University and National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
The round table is devoted to discussion of the major direction of ELBI's and Northwest PRIOR's activity which is development of regional segments of electronic document space of Russia.
The "Info-Lib. Formation of open professional community of developers of scientific and academic electronic collections on the basis of Socionet technologies" project has been presented to the round table participants.

The All-Russian scientific and practical conference IT-Innovations in Education opened in PetrSU.
Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Federal Agency for Education of Russia, the Government of the Republic of Karelia, experts of Russian scientific research institutes, capital and regional universities specializing in the sphere of information technologies gathered in Petrozavodsk for participation in the All-Russian forum.
During the conference innovative development on creation and use of electronic educational resources, as well as issues regarding standardization, certification, and registration of educational information resources, problems of remote training, information safety and legal bases of functioning of Internet resources were discussed.

By a tradition, the conference started with the Liturgy, this year - in the church of Holy Spirit. The Archbishop of Karelia and Petrozavodsk Manuil sent his greeting to the conference participants.

Participants of the conference on problems of perfection of budgetary policy of regions and municipalities of Russia and countries of northern Europe held in PetrSU have accepted recommendations for the Federal center.
On results of discussions lead during the conference its participants have reviewed proposals of participants of group meetings and have prepared a draft of a uniform document which will be presented to Federal authorities as recommendations of the fifth international scientific and practical conference.

The Vth annual International scientific and practical conference "Problems of Perfection of Budgetary Policy of Regions and Municipalities of Russia and Countries of Northern Europe" has opened in PetrSU.
This year the forum has gathered a record in its history number of participants: 150 representatives of legislative and executive authorities from 36 subjects of the Russian Federation and Finland.
The Head of the Republic S.L.Katanandov, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly N.I.Levin, the first assistant to the plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in Northwest federal district L.P.Sovershaeva, director of the Department of interbudgetary relations of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation A.G.Siluanov, deputy head of the Federal exchequer R.E.Artyukhin and others take part in the conference. Chairman of the conference organizing committee is the assistant to the prime minister of the Republic of Karelia the Minister of Finance, Ph.D. in economics A.S.Kolesov.
Among the conference organizers there are the Ministry of Finance of the RK, PetrSU, the government and the parliament of Karelia, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, Representative office of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwest federal district.

Representatives of PetrSU have taken part in the international seminar on realization and introduction of Bologna process in institutes of higher education of Russia and European countries.
This action is a part of TEMPUS project launched in September, 2003, which purpose is development and introduction of curriculums on international marketing, international law and intercultural communication in the sphere of business and law.
Participants of the seminar have discussed aspects of international cooperation in the sphere of education, problems of studying European integration in Russian universities, organization of student and teacher exchange.
Within the framework of the seminar each university has presented its participation in the European educational process.

During the visit a meeting with the representatives of PetrSU administration has been held and prospects of the university development have benn discussed.
Harry Gustaf Helenius and the delegation members being representative of the largest Finnish companies have paid special attention to issues of development of partners' relations of Petrozavodsk State University with the Finnish higher educational institutions and foreign companies, The PetrSU's achievements in spheres of science, innovations, information and technologies.

OldbooksPresentation of cyrillic and hand-written books handed over for a gift to the rare fund of the library by V.Yershov from his personal collection has taken place in the reading room of the Scientific Library of PetrSU.
The collector has been searching for these books for several decades. Having received these monuments of Russian spiritual culture the university library students and teachers of faculties of Philology and History have got the opportunity to study rare sources wasting no time.
During presentation of the new receipts of the rare fund of library the Vice Rector on Informatizati of PetrSU Natalya Ruzanova has presented the electronic library project - by which means computer users can study both rare ancient, and modern editions stored in the libraries of Karelia.

Britons in KareliaThe Head of the Chair of History of Pre-Revolutionary Russia of PetrSU A.Pashkov has presented journalists the site Britons in Karelia as one of the results of implementation of the project of the same title created by teachers, scientists, researchers and employees of PetrSU, Karelian Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy and National Archive of the RK, with assistance of the Ministry of Culture of the RK and the Dmitry Likhachev Foundation.
Through studying and popularization of activity of the group of the Scottish metallurgical engineers and caster led by Charles Gascoigne who came ton Petrozavodsk at the end of the XVIIIth century the project participants aspire to recover contacts of Petrozavodsk universities to the universities of Scotland and England and to initiate the Russian-British academic exchanges and projects in the field of museum business and tourism.
Creation the site Britons in Karelia is the first of many actions planned within the framework of the project.

A conference devoted launching the e-Karelia project was held in PetrSU. Representatives of the European Union, the Ministry of Economic Development of the RK and beneficiary organizations participated in it.
The e-Karelia project is being implemented by the European-Russian consortium of consulting companies, headed by Finnish Helsinki Consulting Group from Finland, with Petrozavodsk State University being a local consortium partner.
During the conference businessmen expected to be basic beneficiaries of the project could learn about the purposes, tasks, lines of activity and essence of the e-Karelia.

Internet conference of the Head of Karelia S.KatanandovInternet conference of the Head of Karelia S.Katanandov was held in PetrSU.
The Head of the Republic answered questions of the citizens the the republics received through Internet, and video-questions from the districts of the republic. Besides, direct television inclusions from streets of Petrozavodsk have been organized. Also students and teachers of the universities of Karelia, editors and journalists of republican mass-media have taken part in the conference. 184 questions from 14 districts of the republic have been received. S.Katanandov has answered 36 questions on the air.

The Academic chorus od PetrSU is receiving the student chorus of the University of Umeå Nationskoren.
Concerts in which both choruses participate became possible due to cooperation of the two universities. The visit of the Swedish chorus is the first experience of cooperation between the student ensembles of the sister-cities. In October reciprocal visit of the PetrSU chorus to Umeå is planned.
Concerts of the Swedish chorus Nationskoren are held in PetrSU and the National Library of Karelia.

International ski marathon Karelia-2005 in which over hundred sportsmen participated was held in the campus of Petrozavodsk State University.
Last year Petrozavodsk marathon has been included in the calendar of Nordic Ski Masters competitions which is traditionally held in Finland, Sweden and Norway.
At the 50-kilometer distance masters of sports from Petrozavodsk Alexander Artemyev and Tatyana Vodorezova were the fastest. Sportsmen from Finland, Norway, Sweden participated in the marathon together with the Russian skiers.

In December of 2004 Petrozavodsk State University being a member of the international consortium that has won the competition of the European Commission on realization of e-Karelia TACIS project launched the project.
The e-Karelia project main goal is fostering economic growth and competitiveness through development of up-to-date ICT accessibility for small and middle enterprises in the republic, as well as support to increased utilization of advanced information technology.

Jerald W.Chesser, assistant to the dean of the college of hotel management, and Kirsten Torguson, coordinator of international projects and programs of the international center of the State Polytechnical University of California (Pomona, USA) are on a visit in PetrSU.
Representatives of the American university have visited the Center for New Information Technologies of PetrSU. Visitors have shown their great interest to the development of the GIS department, Web-laboratory and aspects of remote training. Special attention in the discussion has been paid to prospects of solution of tasks of the joint project Development of Curricula in the Field of Tourism and Hotel Management in PetrSU.

Students of the Faculty of Agriculture of PetrSU have taken part in the Day of DeLaval in the Republic of Karelia organized by DeLaval concern, the recognized world leader in the field of technologies and equipment for dairy farming and milk processing.
At the training and presentation seminar of the company Petrozavodsk students, directors and experts of farms of the republic, and Karelian scientists have got acquainted with the DeLaval operational experience in Russia and technological decisions for specific farms.

The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of PetrSU will participate in the joint Russian-Finnish project Client-Directed Abuse Treatment.
The project was launched in 2004 in Saint Petersburg, and the interested institutions of Petrozavodsk will join it this year. PetrSU and KSPU students together with social workers of the Narcological Clinic will investigate the phenomenon of homelessness that is an overall objective of the project at the first stage.
Participants of the project from Finland are the social hospital of the town of Järvenpää and the Fund of the Finnish A-clinics (A-clinic is a narcological polyclinic).
On results of the research offers for authorities and social establishments on increase in opportunities of social adaptation of homelesses will be produced. Development of new social technologies of work with homelesses, publishing an information directory Helpful Addresses and Telephone Numbers for them is supposed.

Presentation of a new book of Karelian writer Pekki Perttu Trace of Väinämöinen's Boat was held in the Republican Center of National Cultures.
The collection of essays and stories in Finnish language is included into a literary series of Karelian Literature Classics, published at the support of the State Committee of the RK on National Politics and Juminkeko Finnish cultural fund.
At the presentation the fund representative Markku Nieminen and the Dean of the Faculty of Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture Tamara Starshova have announced a series of the research seminars to be held in April and devoted to Karelian classic writers.

A conference devoted to the Russian nongovernmental organizations in development of frontier cooperation in the Northwest of Russia is held in Petrozavodsk at participation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov.
The basic purpose of the conference is to analyse and generalize practical experience of the Ministry's of Foreign Affairs and other bodies' of the government cooperation with nongovernmental organizations regarding frontier cooperation development gained in the northwest regions of the country, as well as implementation of the authority-nongovernmental organizations-business partnership mechanism created in the Republic of Karelia.
The University Rector Professor Victor Vasiliev, the Vice Rector on Science Professor Natalya Dorshakova, Vice Rector for Informatization Natalya Ruzanova, and the Vice Rector for International Relations Nikolai Toivonen participarted in the forum on the part of Petrozavodsk State University.

A meeting with the representative of the Northwest branch of Norwegian People's Aid Markus Karlsen and the Miracle of Motherhood, Murmansk, regional public charitable organization Chairman Yanina Kashpanova has taken place in the Regional Center of New Information Technologies of PetrSU.
The Vice Rector of PetrSU for Informatization Natalya Ruzanova, PCNIT key specialist Svetlana Shlykova and representatives of public associations of Karelia have taken part in the meeting.
Norwegian People's Aid is a Norwegian trade-union-based humanitarian organization. In its work NPA is guided by values of national and international solidarity, human advantage, freedom and equality. Today NPA is one of the largest public organizations in Norway. For more than for 10 years of work in the Barents Region NPA has launched many projects. In 1998 NPA has opened its permanent mission in Murmansk. The basic priority spheres of NPA's activity are humanitarian activity, public health services and social protection, integration of people with limited opportunities and socially unprotected groups of the population in the society, civil society development, human rights and democracy.
Participants of the meeting have discussed possible areas of cooperation, shared experience in realization of projects and agreed upon prospects of cooperation in the sphere of modern information technologies.

The international student seminar Prospects of Russia-EU Relations after the EU Enlargement: Focus on Scientific Research, Education and Culture opened In PetrSU.
Students and the post-graduate students studying political science, international relations and related subjects from 25 Russian cities, both Russian, and foreign scientists and experts in the EU activity, as well as employees of representation of the Eurocommission take part in the seminar.
Problems of the seminar include analysis of events occured in the European Union recently, and also discussion of new opportunities for cooperation between the EU and Russia, opened after the EU expansion within the framework of four common spaces: the Common European Economic Space; the Common Freedom, Security and Justice Space; the Common External Security; the Common Research and Education Space.
Special attention will be paid to prospects of cooperation in the field of education. During the seminar lectures will be read, and discussions of topics in working groups is planned.

Together with the Chairman of the Union of Writers of Karelia, a member of the Board of Trustees of the University Marat Tarasov and representatives of the Russian Foundation of Social, Economic and Intellectual programs Fazil Iskander has held a meeting with the university administration where the creation of new Chair in PetrSU was discussed. It is supposed, that famous Russian and foreign writers will lecture at the Chair.

DAAD in PetrSUThe head of the St.-Petersburg information centre of the German Service for Academic Exchange (DAAD) Mr.Markus Mathyl has held a presentation for students and teachers of PetrSU of this, one of the largest in Germany, organization uniting all German higher educational institutions and promoting development of the academic cooperation abroad, first of all through exchange of students and scientists.

The working group on informational technologies in the Barents region has held an Internet teleconference meeting.
The head of the department of educational technologies of the RCNIT of PetrSU O.Derbeneva representing the Karelian party within the framework of teleconference, discussed the problem of IT infrastructure development in the region with her colleagues from Norway, Finland, Sweden and Murmansk area. Along with aspects regarding Information Services in the Barents Region Project, problems of IT in each of the regions participating in the meeting, as well as plans for inter-regional cooperation in this sphere were discussed.
Participants of the teleconference have got acquainted with the report on the recent actions of the working group and have planned next meetings.

Byelye Kluchi complex has hosted the VIth International scientific and practical conference New Information Technologies in Pulp and Paper Industry and Power Engineering.
The conference was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Republic of Karelia, Metso Automation company, Kondopoga Open Society, Segezhsky Pulp and Paper Plant Open Society, Archangelsk Pulp and Paper Plant Open Society, Karelenergo Open Society, Petrozavodskmash Holding Company Open Society, Rakurs Open Company and Petrozavodsk State University.

A round-table discussion for the representatives of non-governmen organisations in the sphere of childhood protection and youth policy under the program Support of children and youth at risk in Karelia and Vyborg region was held in PetrSU.
This program was initiated by the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation in 2004 and aimed to support and activization of the civil society of two Russian regions participation in the decision of problems of socially adverse children and youth.

International scientific conference devoted to the 60th anniversary of the end of war in Northwest of the USSR has opened in Petrozavodsk State University.
During the conference Finnish and Russian historians specializing in studying the World War II will discuss various problems related to this period and will in detail consider such themes as international relations in the North of Europe during the war, history of Soviet Karelia in 1941-1945, the republic during the Finnish occupation, and also partisan movement in Finland.

The Consul General of Greece in Saint Petersburg Jean Lakatzis has visited PetrSU.

During the meeting both parties discussed possible ways of activization of partner relations between PetrSU and Greek scientific and educational establishments. The document stipulates training and re-training of engineers of the factory on specialities available in PetrSU, organization of work on probation for the university students on the basis of the enterprise, as well as creation of joint groups for research-and-production development.

From July 26 till July 4 botanical garden of PetrSU receives a group of students majoring in botany from the University of Tubingen (Germany) - a city with which Petrozavodsk supports warm partner relations. The head of the group was the curator and the deputy director of the Botanical garden of the University of Tubingen Dr.Matteas Hendriks. Students got acquainted with collections and nature of the largest university botanical garden of the world ( the Bot.Garden of PetrSU ), visited Kivatch reserve and Dr. Vinter's arboretum, more famos as Vinter's Summer Residence in the vicinities of Sortavala. They also got acquainted with work on inventory and analysis of botanical collections of Russia, geoinformation technologies and means of registration of collections. At the final stage of their practical work students got acquainted to the nature of Zaonezhie, studying the most complicated problems of co-evolution of parasitic mushrooms and sedges.

The meeting is organised by the Dmitry S. Likhachev International Charitable Foundation and Kulturstiftung der Laender (the Cultural Foundation of the Federal States) at the support of Petrozavodsk State University and the Government of the Republic of Karelia.
Representatives of 10 charitable foundations of Europe on preservation of monuments of culture in regions of the Northwest federal district of Russia, several universities and restoration centers as well as authorities of Russia, Germany, Italy and Hungary have discussed opportunities of application of the international experience on preservation and use of monuments of architecture, library and archival stocks in the Russian regions.
Participants of the meeting have paid special attention to tasks of restoration and availability of monuments of culture for tourists, organization of museum administration, and to problems of the regional legislation in this sphere.

Opening of the International scientific conference Problem of Physiology of Plants of the North taking place within the framework of the Annual assembly of the Society of physiologists of plants of Russia was held in PetrSU.
The conference was organised by the Society of physiologists of plants of Russia, Scientific council on physiology of plants and photosynthesis of the Russian Academy of Science, Petrozavodsk State University, K.A.Timiryazev Institute of physiology of plants of the Russian Academy of Science, Institute of biology and Institute of wood of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science.
The purpose of the conference is discussion of modern scientific achievements on various problems of physiology, biochemistry and molecular plant biology, and in particular plants of the north. In the center of attention of participants there will be aspects of adaptation and stability of plants, integration of processes of growth and development, mineral feeding, photosynthesis and breath, and also various aspects of production process.

A joint videoconference Remote Training as the Form of Organization of Educational Process in the Educational Establishment was held between Petrozavodsk college of railway transportation and Petrozavodsk State University.
This videoconference was the first between two educational establishments in the city of Petrozavodsk and was held within the framework of a seminar of assistants to directors on academic afairs of the Ministry of Railways, taking place on the basis of Petrozavodsk college of railway transportation to demonstrate opportunities of remote training.
In the end of the videoconference the group of students of the college has completed a test in a computer class of PetrSU, and results of the test were considered at the seminar in the college.

PetrSU became the winner of competition Control Systems of Quality of Experts' Training within Higher Educational Institutions and has won the third place among 62 leading universities of Russia.
The Rector of PetrSU Professor V.N.Vasilev and the First Vice-Rector have informed the journalists about it during the press conference devoted to results of the competition.

The meeting with the most active participants of the project History of our city: time, events, people devoted to the 300-years anniversary of Petrozavodsk was held in PetrSU.
The Vice-Rector on Informatization Natalya Ruzanova together with the Head of the Chair of history of pre-revolutionary Russia A.Kozhanov have shown the basic result of their work - Internet picture album, created by the University in cooperation with the National Archive of the RK, Petropress Publishing house, Administration of Petrozavodsk and citizens of the city.
On N.Ruzanova's words, the project is important not only because of opportunities to present a history of Petrozavodsk by means of a photography. This site will help to keep virtually the print of the unique shape of the city by means of new technologies for the future: the lost buildings, streets, yards and parks, signs of time, historical city traditions.
The citizens of Petrozavodsk invited to the meeting in PetrSU were awarded with memorable gifts for active support of the site.

In the assembly hall of the university the presentation of electronic collection Digital Dissertations and electronic base Literature Online by representatives of the National electronic-information consortium, Moscow was held.
Literature Online contains more than 350 thousand products of the world classical literature in English, and also encyclopedias, dictionaries and directories containing information on authors, including Russian classics, more than one hundred of text-versions of philological magazines, critiques, literary criticism researches.
Digital Dissertations electronic collection can be useful to employees of university and scientific institutes, scientists preparing dissertations and researches since it includes the great volume written and protected both in the USA and the countries of the Western Europe dissertations on various aspects.

Electronic Government seminar in which heads of the republican executive authorities and local self-government of the Republic Karelia have taken part has been hels in PetrSU.
During the plenary session held by the Prime Minister of the RK Pavel Chernov Rector of PetrSU Professor Victor Vasiliev has addressed to the participants of the seminar, while the reports have been given by the Vice Rector of PetrSU on Informatization N.S.Ruzanova Electronic Government) and the Minister of Press, Information and Public Relations Igor Zotochkin (Basic Trends of Informatization in the Bodies of the Government of the Republic of Karelia).
During the seminar representatives of the ministries, State Committees, and city administrations paid special attention of their colleagues to the aspect of using information technologies in the bodies of state and executive authority, and also in local self-governments.
Within the framework of the seminar round table discussions were organized, where the project of the Program of Informatization of the republic was discussed.

 

February 9-11, 2004

The seminar "Commercialization of Innovations organized at the support of TACIS project Assistance to development of small innovational enterprises in the Baltic region. The Russian Federation was held in PetrSU.
During the seminar leading experts of the Eurounion and Russia have acquainted students with the basic moments concerning the state support of innovational activity, legal aspects of commercialization of innovations, contents of actual process of commercialization of innovations, and also features of promotion of the innovational product in the market.
Besides the course of theoretical lectures for participants of the seminar the practical work on the basic theme of the seminar was organized.

The Plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in Northwest Federal district Ilya Klebanov who has arrived to Karelia with working visit, has visited the new academic-laboratory complex of Petrozavodsk State University.
Together with the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, the Rector of PetrSU Victor Vasiliev the Plenipotentiary of the President has visited on final graduation examination of the students of the Faculty of Physical Engineering, the computer aided library and rooms in the dormitory of post-graduate students.

The Concil on Informatization at the Head of the RK was held in the Government of the Republic of Karelia.
During the session of the Council the situation developing in the sphere of informatization in Russia and Karelia, including introducing computer technologies in the activity of bodies of the government, business, schools and libraries and daily life of the population was analysed.
The Vice Rector of PetrSU on Informatization Natalya Ruzanova has noted in her statement that from the point of view of introducing modern information technologies Karelia has a good reputation. The fact that the site of the bodies of the Government of the RK is not only one of the best and rich with information in Russia, but also is rather popular among Internet users speaks for itself. However, on Natalya Ruzanova's words, it is necessary to continue further integration and information resources upgrading to make them both accessible, and also necessary for organizations and population of Karelia.

In PetrSU the inter-regional and international seminar Northwest of Russia: problems of transition to the innovational way of development has opened organized within the framework of international TACIS program Assistance to development of the small innovational enterprises in the Baltic region. The Russian Federation.
Participants of the seminar among whom there are experts in support of innovational activity, teachers of higher educational institutions and representatives of authorities from Saint Petersburg, Murmansk, Kaliningrad regions, Karelia, Finland and Holland, aspire to develop offers that would allow to unit efforts of public authorities, scientific community, and business circles for development of innovational activity and introduction of new technologies in the northwest of Russia.
At the seminar it is planned to train representatives of local administrations and regional branches of PetrSU principles and methods of creating innovative scientific and business centers in the districts of the RK.

The Rector of the university V.N.Vasiliev, the Vice Rector on International Relations N.R.Toivonen, heads of faculties have acquainted the visitors with the work of the higher educational institution in the sphere of expansion of internatrional cooperation and establishing interuniversity contacts, and also about achievements of PetrSU in various spheres of its activity.

The rector of PetrSU, professor V.N.Vasiliev has held press conference with representatives of the Karelian mass-media.
At the meeting with journalists the head of the university has informed about results of work of the commission of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation that had accomplished complex control of activity of the university. On V.N.Vasiliev's words, the Moscow commission was positive about results of the work of PetrSU.
Experts of the Ministry of Education of Russia have noted high level of knowledge of students, activity of representatives of the faculty and university administration in the sphere of adjustment of the international cooperation and introduction of new information technologies.

PetrSU was visited by the Consul-General of the United States in Saint Petersburg Morris Hughes, the consul on economical and political tasks Abigail Rupp, the consul on press and cultureM David Siffkin and the employee of the center of information technologies of the consulate Elena Andryushenkova.
Within the framework of visit the meeting of representatives of delegation with administration of the university was held. During conversation representatives of PetrSU's administration have in detail told about activity of the higher educational institution in the sphere of the international cooperation, about achievements of the university in this direction, abd projects and programs realized together with the US higher educational institutions. The first Vice Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin has thanked the American consulate for the assistance rendered to our high school in realization of some interuniversity projects. In turn, the Consul-General of the USA Morris Hughes has congratulated the administration of the university on the successes achieved in strengthening PetrSU's of partner relations with the higher educational institutions of the USA.

The Director of the Information bureau of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Saint Petersburg Ritva Kattelus has visited PetrSU.
PetrSU is one of the organizations actively cooperating with the Nordic Council of Ministers, which became the basic occasion to organize a meeting of representatives of the administrations of Petrozavodsk State University and the North-European Open University with the new director of the Information Bureau of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Saint Petersburg.

Karelian and American colleagues told the journalists about their plans of further cooperation. Signing of the Agreement on cooperation between the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and Petrozavodsk State University (Russia) was held.
According to the document, cooperation can be accomplished in three basic spheres: exchange of teachers, joint research activity (including publications and other projects) and exchange of students. During five year validity period of the agreement the universities have agreed to develop joint research activity with the help of their teaching resources and equipment, to discuss offers related to the further teamwork and academic exchange including the opportunity of short-term exchange visits, joint publications of scientific researches and other projects appropriate to subjects. Scientific research, lectures, and realization of special programs according to the agreement are called priority kinds of activity in the sphere of exchange of teachers between the universities.
"The success of the given agreement is based on mutual trust of the two universities," - is noted in the memorandum.

Official visit of the delegation of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, to PetrSU was finished.
For four days of their visit to Karelia the Chancellor Kathryn Ann Martin, the Vice Chancellor Gregory Robert Fox and Professor John Wendell Straus have held a number of working meetings with the PetrSU administration where the draft Agreement on cooperation between the two universities was discussed, met the deans of humanitarian and natural-science faculties, visited Regional Center for New Informational Technologies, Scientific Library, North European Open University and the new university academic building.
Cultural program of the American delegation included acquaintance with Petrozavodsk points of interest, visiting National and Musical theatres, trips to the town of Kondopoga, Kovatch waterfalls and Kizhi Island.
The final point of the visit was signing of the new agreement on further contacts between the universities of Minnesota and Petrozavodsk in the field of development of science and training of students, as well as the Declaration on ooperation within the framework of North European Open University.

September 10-11, 2003

Scientific and practical educational seminar organized by Petrozavodsk State University and the Northern European Open University within the framework of Russian-Swedish Forest Education project is held in PetrSU.
The basic goals of the given project are improvement of professional skills and competence of the Russian experts working in the wood sector of economy, and also of students of profile high schools, rendering support in establishing contacts between Swedish and Russian companies, interosculation of cultures of two countries, including cultures of business dealing.
Educational actions of the Forest Education project taking place in several regions of northwest Russia, namely Archangelsk and Leningrad regions, republics of Komi and Karelia, will mention all basic sub-branches of the wood industry.
The course of theoretical lectures for students and representatives of the local enterprises of the wood complex taught in PetrSU is devoted to problems of introduction of new technologies in the wood industry, perfection of wood transportation, bio-energetics and use of biofuel, forest management and reforestation. In parallel with lectures, within the framework of the seminar in Petrozavodsk a number of working meetings of Karelian timber merchants with representatives of enterprises of wood branch of Sweden is organized.

Today on the University street of Petrozavodsk unveiling of the new academic laboratory building of PetrSU's was held.
The Head of the Republic of Karelia S.L.Katanandov, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the chairman of Committee on problems of the North and the Far East V.N.Pivnenko, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia N.I.Levin, Head of Petrozavodsk administration V.N.Masliakov, rector of the university V.N.Vasiliev, representatives of the republic authorities and university administration, and also builders have taken part in the opening ceremony. On S.L.Katanandov's words, unveiling of the new university building is the major event for social and economic development of the region. He has also noted the huge work accomplished by the university administration and Karelstroymekhanisatsia employees.
91 million roubles was invested in construction of the building. Almost all this money was received within the federal investment program at the university's financial participation.
The next building is first on the agenda. Rector V.N.Vasiliev has noted that construction of another university building can be finished within the next two years.

In Petrozavodsk State University annual Week of Finnish Computer Science has opened.
The present conference is the tenth and is dated for the 300-th anniversary of Petrozavodsk. As the rector of the university V.N.Vasiliev has noted in his performance opening the Week of Finnish Computer Science, this is the unique scientific action included in the program of celebrating the anniversary of the city. PetrSU's authorities V.N.Vasiliev and the Vice-rector for Informatization, N.S.Ruzanova have wished participants of the conference fruitful work and have thanked representatives of the University of Helsinki and professor Timo Alanko for assistance rendered to Petrozavodsk high school during introduction of information and communication technologies. As a result of ten years' cooperation of universities of Helsinki and Petrozavodsk organization and introduction of the large number of various projects, including annual Week of Finnish Computer Science in PetrSU became possible.
It is necessary to note that the problematics of introduction of new methods of information technologies is declared the basic theme of reports of the present conference will last till June, 28.

In the Ministry of Economic Development of the RK within the framework of visit of delegation of Vasterbotten County (Sweden) official opening of the Russian version of the Internet site BizBarents.com was held.
The purpose of the presented project is to bring together Swedish and Russian businessmen and to create favorable conditions for development of trade and economic cooperation between the countries.
Upon presentation of the site Annika Blumster, the head of the BizBarents project and of Competence Development Center, has visited the Regional Centre of New Information Technologies of PetrSU where she has got acquainted with work of the web-laboratory and the department of GIS-technologies of the Center.

Today PetrSU was visited by delegation of representatives of the the European Region of the Year international organisation and of Balearic Islands.
The President of the European Region of the Year Organisation Xavier Tudela, Special Advisor Antoni Castillo, representatives of the Administration of the President of the Balearic Islands (Spain) Bartolomeu Llinas Ferra, general director on international problems, and Antoni Garsias Simo, general director on economic problems, have discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation within the framework of Euripean Union with the administration of Petrozavodsk higher educational institution.
Spain, and in particular Balearic archipelago is one of the important tourist directions in Europe: last year this region has been visited by 10 million people. According to the Rector of PetrSU Professor V.N.Vasiliev, the high school is interested in activization of work with educational institutions of Balearic Islands for exchange of experience in tourist sphere which is the leading one in this region. In turn, the guests of the university were interested in studying experience of PetrSU in some spheres of activity that are of typical for us. Representatives of the Administration of the President of Balearic Islands have promised to meet with the administration of higher educational institutions of the archipelago and to tell them about the intentions and wishes of Petrozavodsk State University.
Upon completion of the meeting for the Spanish delegation fact-finding excursion on PetrSU was organized.

Today in the administration of PetrSU press conference of the Karelian delegation of IIIrd Moscow International Salon of Innovations and Investments held from February 4 till February 7 in the All-Russian exhibition centre under the initiative of the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies of the Russian Federation has passed.
Two developments of scientists of the University have received gold and silver medals, and the entire PetrSU exposition, unique of the European North Russia, was noted as the best among all presented in the section of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Thus, according to participants of the forum, the first participation of the higher educational institution in the international exhibition of such a high level can be considered successful.

PetrSU is awarded with the gold medal of the International association of national industry support.
The rector of the university, professor V.N.Vasilev has informed about it at the session of the Learned Council held on December, 30. The high school was awarded to this great honour for realization of more than thirty big international projects together with the World Bank, Nordic Council of Ministers, Soros and Ford Foundations, and Barents Secretariat within 2001-2002. The most significant of them are the following: Open University of Northern Europe working on the base of PetrSU and created at the support of high schools of the Russian Federation, Finland, Norway, Yugoslavia, the USA, Denmark and France; Health and welfare in transitive societies (together with high schools of Finland, Ireland and Ukraine); Effective energy saving technologies (together with Global Ecological Foundation); and Creation of the Centre of the European documentation.
The rector of PetrSU was also awarded with the diploma of association along with the gold medal as a sign of recognition of his oustanding qualities as the leader and his key merits.
The association of support of the national industry was created in 1801 by Napoleon. Annually the association awards representatives of business circles of the different countries (and since 1998 and representatives of the countries of the CIS), who gained appreciable successes in development of industry, science and engineering. This year the gold medal of Association was awarded to 68 representatives from Russia including 7 higher educational institutions.

Meeting of the Learned Council was held in PetrSU.
The rector of Petrozavodsk State University Professor V.N.Vasilev has presented the summary report about the VIIth Congress of the Union of Rectors of higher educational institutions of Russia. According to the rector problems of integration of the higher Russian education in the European educational system, realization of experiment of Uniform State Examination for university entrants in Russia, taxation of high schools, and also the problem of providing the universities with the status of scientific institutions were discussed the most vividly at the All-Russian congress.
The deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation from the Republic of Karelia V.N.Pivnenko has taken part in the session of the Learned Council.

The delegation of experts from Finland has visited PetrSU. Representatives of the University of Oulu and Polytechnical Institute of Kajani have arrived for acquaintance with activity of our high school in the field of information technologies.
During visit the meeting with the rector of PetrSU Professor V.N.Vasiliev was held where the foreign visitors have learned about the achievements, the current work and plans of the university, including in the field of international cooperation.
The Finnish delegation has visited the university computer classes and the Regional Centre of New Information Technologies during the excursion to gain a more complete concept of the realization of Internet projects in accomplished in PetrSU.
By results of the trip the Finnish party intends to pass to development of more detailed plans on activization and expansion of cooperation with Petrozavodsk State University.

By the order of the Rector dated November 14, 2002, N559 and on the basis of the decision of the Learned Council of PetrSU dated October 1, 2002, report N 6, the chair of "Family medicine (general medical practice)" at the Faculty of Medicine is created.
Professor Natalya V.Dorshakova is appointed the Head of the chair. The new chair is located in the Consultative Diagnostic Center of Republican Hospital.
Now there are 75 chairs at PetrSU.

Meeting of participants of the competition with the rector of PetrSUThe students of PetrSU have successfully performed on zone competitions on programming held in the beginning of November in Saint Petersburg.
The teams "Trinity" (Denis Koshman, Alexander Churumov and Yury Fadeyev) and "Magloy" (Roman Soshkin, Alexander Korol and Denis Vlasov) in persistent struggle have won the right to represent our university in the final round of the championship of Russia

The site of Petrozavodsk State University became the winner of the All-Russian competition of educational resources of the Internet in the nomination "Higher Education".
The competition was organized by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, Open society Institute (Soros Foundation), Russia, and Federation of Internet Education. Academic chorus of PetrSU became the winner of the Second All-Russian competition of university choruses in the nomination of amateur choruses!
Our remarkable chorus is also awarded with the prize of spectators' sympathies, the head of collective Georgy Teratsuiants is named the best conductor, and Larica Berdino has become the best concertmaster!.

Tatyana Ivanovna AGARKOVA, the Head of Faculty of Improvement of Professional Skills and Professional Retraining of Teachers, the director of the educational innovational center of PetrSU for her active participation in the program of development of education of our city "Capital education";
Olga KARAS, the student of the Faculty of Economics of PetrSU, the third prize-winner of the championship of Europe on track and field athletics for her high achievements in sports.

 

November 15, 2001 During the International Education Week, on November 15, 2001 Alexander V. Antochtchenko (Ass. Prof., Department of Russian History) delivered a lecture on the topic "Personal impressions from American universities."
The lecturer characterized main features of university education in the U.S. and told about peculiarities of lecturing and conducting seminars at Californian University in Berkeley and at Harvard University where he was a visiting scholar. His lively impressions from the relations between professors and students and from students' everyday life rose a special interest of the public. Slide show accompanied his speech. At the end of the lecture everybody honored in the minute of silence the memory of victims of the 11 September terrorists attacks in New York.
